Humidifiers are devices used to add moisture to overly dry air. There are two kinds of humidifiers cool mist and warm mist. Which humidifier you choose depends on your baby's needs, and your personal preference. However, cool mist humidifiers are generally recommended for use in baby rooms because of safety concerns.

Warm mist humidifiers use a heating coil to boil distilled water that can be sent into the air in a fine spray. Leaving a mobile toddler alone in a room with a warm mist humidifier may put the baby in danger; the hot coil and hot water could burn the baby if he got too close or began playing with it. If your baby's pediatrician has recommended you use a warm mist humidifier in baby's room, putting it on a table out of baby's reach is the best option.

Generally, cool mist humidifiers are safer for babies' rooms. These humidifiers simply send a fine mist into the room that is not hot. During hot, dry months, cool mist humidifiers will help cool the room, often adding to baby's comfort. Cool mist humidifiers generally use less energy, which can save money in the long run. They do require a little more cleaning and maintenance; and the filter will need to be replaced regularly. Bacteria or mold may grow inside the cool mist humidifier, so it is wise to buy an antibacterial cartridge for the water tank during extended period of use. The cool versions can also be louder, causing a light sleeping baby to wake during the night.

So, other than the boiling water which is a huge safety issue; whether you choose a cool or warm mist humidifier is up to you, as not real concerns differ except the boiling water. Make sure whichever one you choose that it is out of baby's reach and maintained according to its instructions.
