Before using your new humidor, it is very important that you set up the humidor humidifier correctly. Of course, your first inclination is to fill it with cigars and start enjoying it. The problem is that your humidor has not been seasoned. The wood is dry and must be hydrated in order to protect and maintain the quality of your cigars. If not properly seasoned, your new humidor will take its moisture from your cigars possibly ruining them.

Seasoning your humidor is neither difficult nor time consuming but as I said must be done before use. There are a couple of different ways in which to do this.

One way of doing this is to get a small new sponge and wet it with distilled water. Squeeze the water out so that the sponge is just damp. Wipe the cedar inside of the humidor with the damp sponge making sure that there is no excess distilled water anywhere. Put a piece of plastic on the bottom of the humidor and place the damp sponge on it. Close the humidor for 24 hours. If at the end of the 24 hours the sponge is dry, dampen the sponge again and repeat for another 24 hours. If the sponge is still damp at the end of 24 hours, the humidor is ready to use.

Another way of doing this is by use of humidifier liquid which is a mixture of propylene glycol and distilled water. Put the recommended amount of liquid in your humidor humidifier, close the humidor for approximately 24 48 hours and then with a hygrometer, measure the humidity in the humidor. If the humidity is at approximately 70% (+/-5%) your humidor is ready to use.

It is important that the humidity level in your humidor be maintained at approximately 70% to keep your cigars at their best. Too much lower than 70% your cigars become too dry, lose flavor and burn too fast. Too much above 70% and your cigars will be too moist, can get moldy and may be hard to draw.

It is also recommended that the temperature in your humidor be maintained at approximately 70 degrees F. Your hygrometer will come in handy here too as most also measure temperature.
