GM retained the brand as opposed to transferring it to Motors Liquidation Organization when it filed for bankruptcy. This was so it could investigate on promoting the brand. Chinese automobile maker Sichuan Tengzhong announced that it would acquire the Hummer brand name but it withdrew its bid after it met the disapproval of Chinese regulators.

The Hummer brand traces its roots back to a military vehicle- the Jeep. Inside the early 1980s LTV Corporation created a design to compete for a contract provided by the U.S. Army. The car was to serve as the chief light tactical car or truck for the military. This was referred to as the High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Automobile (HMMWV ) or Humvee.

The Humvees were definitely especially present inside the Persian Gulf War inside the 90s and their wartime durability garnered a great deal of positive feedback inside and outside in the military circles. With this, the AM General decided to produce a civilian version of the Humvee called the Hummer. Common Motors brought the legal rights towards brand in 1999 and finally became answerable for production, marketing and distributing the Hummer model and its future line of SUVs.

In February 2010, years following GM's bankruptcy, the Hummer model was to become dismantled by the company. Sichuan Tengzhong offered a new deal following the first was not realized. Although, close to April of this year, income hit all-time low and dealerships started shutting down. The last from the Hummer H3s rolled off line at Shreveport in May.
