Weather patterns affect all wildlife to some degree and are essential to their survival. Knowing how the different types of weather affects the daily movements and patterns of the Whitetail Deer will definitely set you apart from other hunters.

Have you ever gone outside and smelled a rain storm coming or heard of someone having an old injury start to hurt when bad weather is coming? Well the animals in the wild have a built in sixth sense that lets them know when a bad storm is coming. In most cases a storm, strong wind, temperature, moon phases or fronts will alter the regular pattern of the Whitetail. I say most cases because you have to take into account other variables that also affect Whitetail Deer patterns such as pressure from other hunters, geographic location, and lets not forget the rut when deer move all over the place all the time only stopping to rest or eat occasionally. Typically Whitetail Deer will eat twice a day then find a spot to lie down and chew their cud, like a cow. Most hunters don't think of Whitetails as being ruminants. Just knowing the information in this one small paragraph alone could put you ahead of most other hunters.

Watch the weather closely. When a big storm is approaching deer will go on a feeding frenzy to increase their calorie intake enabling them to find a warm comfortable place to hang out and ride the storm out. After the storm they will be hungry and will be looking for food again. In the winter look for deer feeding during the warmest times of the day, preferably in the sun. Watch other animals in the woods; if they are feeding then the deer will most likely be feeding also. Hint: remember how I mentioned the cows?
