. The most practiced technique of indoor gardening is hydroponics. Hydroponics is the practice of growing plants without soil. This is possible because plants generally don't need soil, they just need nutrients, in the form of inorganic ions in water, water, oxygen at their roots, and carbon dioxide. The main benefits of hydroponic growing are reduced size to grow a larger crop, more nutrient rich crops, use less water than traditional growing methods, ability to grow all year round, and the ability to easily control the growing environment. There are two general ways this is accomplished, both use light sources such as LED grow lights to help the process.

One method of accomplishing this is a system where the roots are suspended in, or periodically exposed to, liquid nutrient water. Possibly the simplest method used to accomplish this is called static solution culture. With static solution culture the plants are grown in containers full of, possibly aerated, nutrient water. The main difficulty of this method is in keeping the water level at the correct height. The water level drops over time due to evaporation and the plant absorbing it. The problem is worsened if the water is not aerated as the water level must always cover enough of the root to allow nutrients to be absorbed but leave enough of the root exposed to the atmosphere to allow them to absorb oxygen. One way to alleviate this is through the use of a float valve to automatically refill the water once it drops below a predetermined height.

The other method is through the use of the system of aeroponics. Aeroponics is a system where plants are suspended in the air and a mist, or aerosol, of nutrient water is applied to the roots. The plants are usually kept in an environment saturated with the nutrient aerosol. This system has many advantages over other hydroponic systems. The main advantage is that plants receive all of the available oxygen and carbon dioxide to their roots, stems, and leaves. This in turn increases the the rate at which the plant grows. Another advantage is that plants grown using aeroponics require much less resources and have much more nutrients than plants grown with traditional hydroponic methods. Aeroponically grown plants have 80% more essential minerals than plants grown with other hydroponic methods. They also use 65% less water and require 25% as much nutrients as plants grown with traditional hydroponic methods. These all lead to more efficient use of resources, less resources used, smaller time between planting and harvesting, larger crop yields, and easier management of growing environment.

A big problem with indoor gardening is the fact that there is generally no or limited natural light. The solution for this is by setting up lights in the grow environment. There are multiple types of lights to choose from including high-pressure sodium or metal halide lights. The problems with these types of lights are that the need for reflectors to direct the light makes them hard to install, they are inefficient resulting in higher use of electricity, and they produce unwanted heat. A more recommended alternative is the use of LED lights. LED lights have a number of advantages. LED grow lights are much more efficient than other types of lights resulting in the use of less electricity and in turn saving money. They also produce light more directionally than other types of lamps, eliminating the need for hard to install reflectors. LED lights also produce very little heat, allowing you greater control over the heat of the growth environment. This, combined with the fact that LED lights come in colors from all ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum, allows you to have complete and dynamic control over the environment of your garden while maximizing efficiency and reducing costs.
