Environment: Rockwool is not exactly a natural material; although there are similar substances made from volcanoes and are natural. Rockwool is basically a mixture of rock and chalk, which is heated in 3000 degrees Fahrenheit. This mixture is spun and cooled, turning it into the final product you buy from your hydroponic retailer. It's not biodegradable because it is artificially made. Rockwool, when disposed of will settle in a landfill indefinitely and this can affect the environment. Therefore, it is advisable to not purchase new Rockwool during every growing season; instead you should reuse the old Rockwool by rinsing the old one thoroughly. It is not only better for the environment but also cost-effective.

Health: Rockwool should be handled with care. It can cause irritation to the eyes, lungs and skin; it can cause long-term effects if it's exposed to the skin for very long. The irritation is not caused because of any chemical reaction in Rockwool, but it's caused just the way grass or wheat cause irritation to the skin. To avoid these health complications, wear goggles, dust mask and gloves when handling Rockwool.

pH: Compare to any other media, Rockwool is more alkaline. Because of this you have to set adequate nutrient solution pH to make ideal for the roots. This process can be problematic if there are more than one media, as you'll have to adjust separate pH level for one media and separate for plants grown in Rockwool. You may have to keep track of your pH levels on regular basis, because Rockwool actively shifts its pH balance.

Pre treatment: Rockwool demands pre treatment before it is used for hydroponics Systems. Before you place your hydroponics plants into the Rockwool, it is very important to soak it in pH treated water for a day. Rockwool has been very beneficial in different ways, it's a bit labor intensive but isn't of a major concern for the hydroponics growers!
