Hyperdontia And Other Strange Teeth Disorders

Hyperdontia

Hyperdontia

Hyperdontia is a condition where extra teeth emerge in the mouth. There are several types of hyperdontia. Supplemental hyperdontia is a type characterized by normal shaped teeth appearing alongside other normal teeth. Tuberculate hyperdontia is a type where the teeth are "barrel shaped". The conical form is when there are "peg shaped" teeth. Compound odontome hyperdontia occurs when there are several smaller tooth-like structures. Complex odontom involves a random dental tissue mass.

Extra teeth are referred to as supernumerary teeth. They can be called paramolars, distomolars, or mesiodens, depending upon their position in the mouth. Mesiodens are the most common type of supernumerary teeth. These are malformed, peg-shaped teeth that appear in between two maxillary central incisors.

Causes of hyperdontia

Environmental factors and heriditary factors seem to play a role in the development of this condition. Some supernumerary teeth do not emerge, but may delay the emergence of teeth nearby or cause other types of dental problems. Dental X-rays are typically employed to discover hyperdontia.

Hypodontia

Hypodontia is the opposite of hyperdontia. In this case, there are missing teeth. The teeth are missing because they have failed to develop. To be considered hypodontia, patients must be missing up to 6 teeth, not counting the third molars. About 20 percent of the population have missing third molars.

There are a number of other terms used to describe missing teeth, like anodontia, oligodontia, teeth aplasia, agenesis of teeth, and congenitally missing teeth.

Hypodontia prevalence

The most common missing teeth in caucasians are the wisdom teeth, followed by the lower second premolars, upper lateral incisors, and upper second premolars. Females are four times more likely than men to have hypodontia.

Preliminary data was published by the Journal of the American Dental Association showing a correlation between permanent teeth hypodontia and ovarian cancer. The study demonstrated that women with a certain type of ovarian cancer are eight times more likely to have the disorder than healthy women. This suggests that hypodontia may be an appropriate marker pointing to the elevated risk of ovarian cancer in women.

Causes of hypodontia

The cause of hypodontia is currently unknown, but the disorder is thought to be connected with environmental or genetic factors during the development of the teeth. The disorder has been reported alongside low birth weight, higher maternal age, rubella virus infections in embryos, and multiple births. The fact that there are more cases of hypodontia in twins suggests that perinatal environmental factors may be responsible.
