"Procrastination is the thief of time" these are golden words indeed. Procrastination is the habit of putting things off for later', and ending up doing them in the last minute under great pressure, producing shabby results, or not doing them at all. This is very common in human behavior. Only those with sufficient mental strength and will power can overcome procrastination and complete the task at hand well in time. However, for some people, procrastination may be more than just a bad habit it could be a mental disorder triggered by a certain incident or event that may have happened in their lives. Such people can also overcome procrastination through hypnosis and hypnotherapy.
The Effects of Procrastination
For one, procrastination makes a person lose face in society. By performing their duties late and producing shabby results or not performing them at all can negatively impact a persons' credibility in society for their lack of commitment and unreliable nature. It can also have disastrous results on the person's psyche and self-confidence. As a result of not completing an assigned task, the person may feel stressed out, guilty and burdened. This further lowers the person's productivity. Therefore, it is a vicious cycle. Once a person has set into this cycle, he/she becomes apprehensive of new tasks assigned to them as they fear that they might put the new task off as well, and not complete it, which will result in their losing face in society even more. Thus, procrastination breeds more procrastination and inefficiency.
Students and Procrastination
Studies have shown students have the highest rate of procrastination. On the academic front, students are constantly burdened by many tests and assignments that demand a lot of their time and attention. As a result, students develop an aversion to them, and in retaliation, put things off for later. Students seem to consider procrastination a kind of escape measure', which enables them to get away from certain things without feeling guilty about them. Since procrastination is all about telling oneself, "I'll do it later", it is a sort of promissory note that gives one a license to take more time to do something. As a result, the conscience loses its voice and is suppressed with false promises. The feeling is quite complicated procrastinating while knowing full well that the task is not going to be done!
