I am interested in becoming a medical transcriptionist as a way to learn more about medicine, human illness, and medical treatments. I am a personal trainer and have found that my lack of medical knowledge hinders my ability to help people lose weight and exercise properly. By becoming an MT, I will gain the medical knowledge I need as well as expand the information I have of anatomy and physiology. Often clients will ask me about a particular medication they are taking or alert me to an illness or other medical condition they have. With MT training and the medical research that it can sometimes involve, I will be able to understand more fully a client's illness or special circumstances and will be able to adjust my exercise and nutrition program accordingly.

Although I could not give my clients any medical advicethat is strictly the purview of their own doctor or medical practitionermy MT training will help me to understand what their doctors tell them and help me to understand how to design a program that works for them. The second advantage to working as an MT is that I'll be able to work from home. As the parent of two teenagers, I need to be available to them to help them prepare for college, prepare for sports team events, and facilitate their own work schedules. If I can work from my home office, I save time (no commuting to work!) which means more time available for helping my family. The extra income I can earn from medical transcription is also of considerable importance to me. With the downturn in the economy, my work and my spouse's income has seen a considerable dip. Since both my children are planning on college, we have to find ways to increase our income to meet this new challenge.
