I Can Do That! - Making The Hard Work Look Easy

In over 25 years acting in movies and TV, I always hear the same thing from people - "Oh

, that is so easy, I know I could do that." Really? You don't see everything it takes for us to make this very hard work look so easy.

When audiences are watching those 90 minutes of film, they're not thinking about what went into creating it. All they see in front of them is seemless, very believable and the actors don't look like they're working. When it's done right, actors become characters in the story - not someone you watch and think they are just pretending.

That's the point - to create something that is captivating and moving. And the work of the actors didn't look like work - it seemed real.

So, what's the secret? And can that same secret help you create an effective, seemless performance in your work?

There are 3 keys to making it look easy:

1) You Have to be Prepared! - I got to work with the comic genius Mel Brooks many years ago. His films always look like total chaos where a bunch of funny people just show up and run fast and loose with the story. Watching him work, every one of those crazy moments was precisely planned. They worked each bit until it was just right and they got the most humor out of it. And it got more amazing when the cameras finally rolled and they made it seem like they'd never done that bit before in their lives! The only way they could do that was because they had rehearsed it and perfected every detail.

2) Have Faith - You've done that work to get prepared, now it's time to let that work enable your talent to come out. You have to believe you're ready. Mr. Brooks does everything he can to put us in the best place to make people laugh. When the cameras roll, we have to have faith that we can do that - really well! Without that faith, you can't...

3) Be Fully Present - It is most important that after all your work is done, you commit to be fully present in the current time. By giving all you can in preparing to be your best, once the moment comes you have to be fully engaged in that place and DO your best. You must also be comfortable enough to listen and react to those around you as new information gets presented and others contribute their energy and ideas. Your work and trust in this moment should create that feeling of effortlessness that true freedom brings. All that work and practice wasn't about making it look rigid and planned - it was meant to free up your very best energy within a structure that serves the story. Mr. Brooks has a knack for creating a fine tuned machine that looks like a bunch of kids playing when the cameras were rolling.

It is a lot of work to make anything look easy. But if you follow these 3 steps, you can put the same command and ease into the work that you do.
