I Cheated Now I Feel Guilty - What Should I Do Next
Having a relationship is great but it entails responsibility and commitment towards one another. It does not end with sweet nothings and should not be taken lightly. And relationships do stagnate. Especially if it there are unresolved problems and misunderstandings. When these kinds of factors start corroding the relationship, it will weaken the love and dedication of the couple and will be vulnerable to temptation. Soon, one can find himself or herself having an affair with another person, or even more than one individual.
Though cheating can satisfy certain aspects of an individual like his or her ego, sexual needs or anything similar, it does not however spare him or her from having guilty feelings. More often than not, it will gradually eat up the person from within until he or she loses their self-respect and self-esteem. Unless of course, the person never really did love his or her current partner in the first place. Otherwise, the unpleasant feeling will remain until sated. So, what does a person do when he or she finds him or herself guilty of the infidelity previously committed?
The answer varies depending on each person because they have their own individual beliefs and perspective towards the dilemma. Some people strictly believe that honesty is the best policy. The rationale behind this is that these people believe that in order for a relationship to become strong, the couple should be honest about everything, even their mistakes because this will help them understand each other more and will grow as a stronger individual. The drawback to this is that not all people are able to handle the revelation well enough and more often than not, the mistake committed gets engraved in the subconscious of the victim and has a tendency to be brought up during bad arguments or misunderstanding. This will put the other person on the defensive side and be resentful.
Furthermore, this will make the previously cheating partner feel that he is not forgiven at all and may lead him or her into cheating again rather than reforming him or her. On the other hand, there is this thing called "reckless honesty". Some people believe that being honest does not always provide the best results and could even worsen a situation. The rationale behind this is that coming out clean to a lover about your cheating can sow distrust subconsciously in the other person's mind. This may manifest later in the relationship at the worst possible scenario. In fact, this sometimes lead to the previously cheated partner to commit infidelity his or herself rather than learn from it just to spite the previously cheating partner. Moreover, being honest does not always guarantee that the cheated partner would still be willing to work out the relationship and the fact is, not all would want to stay with someone who previously cheated on them, especially those who have similar past experiences.
These two ideals are the first few things that you have to choose from before even starting doing anything about the situation. Once you have the answer to this, everything should follow. Another thing to keep in mind is that regardless of the outcome, you have to take responsibility for it since it was you who initially wanted to do it. Yes, there may be factors which affected or influenced your decision to cheat but committing infidelity does not and will not resolve boredom in a relationship. The act does not justify it. Taking responsibility means that if the person discovers what you did and no longer wants to be connected to you then you should be aware that he or she has all the right to reject you. It was your choice. No one told you to do it in the first place. On the other side, you also have the choice to keep mum and work out the relationship to the best that you can while bearing with the burden of the guilt of the crime you have committed.
To sum it all up, it is just all about making a decision about it and taking responsibility. Neither advices can guarantee favorable results but it is better to do something about it than do nothing at all. But then again, you can just always find the easy way out by leaving the one whom you cheated and go with this new person. In the first place, you would not be cheating if you had not lost affection with your partner and developed feelings towards this new person.
