I Flew Solo To The Movies!

I figured I would visit my sister-in-law since she lived nearby but I thought it might be weird to visit for three hours

. I didnt really have a large amount of spending money to be able to do three hours of shopping and the nearby mall was closing early anyway due to its Sunday hours. I thought I was trapped until I had an amazing idea!

Ever since I was a teenager I always wanted to go to the movie theater by myself. Everyone thought it was a strange idea and figured I would prefer to share the fun with a friend or family member. I always felt that going to the theater on my own would make the experience new and exciting. I decided to go for it. My husband was a little jealous that he was going to be working while I was having fun on my own at the movies but we both knew that I deserved the free time! My daughter was with my mom and I was alone! Mind you, it is very rare that I am alone so I grabbed the opportunity immediately to do something Ive always wanted to do.

There was only one issue. My choice of movies was limited. I went to a small theater that offered a maximum of five films. The timing also had to be perfect otherwise my husband would be waiting for me in the arctic weather to pick him up after his place of employment closed! We went to the theater together to check the movie times and to see how long each movie was that I would be able to watch. I got excited for a moment and thought that Id have the chance to finally see Avatar but it was already starting and it is about three hours long. I figured Up in the Air with George Clooney might be interesting but it wasnt showing for another two and a half hours. I started to get nervous as I scrolled down the short list of movies Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel The Princess and the Frog uh oh. Then I spotted it- Its Complicated starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin! I was psyched because the length and show time were both perfect. I dropped him off and returned to the theater to see this movie.

If youve read my movie reviews in the past, youll know that I dont normally venture to the theater to watch a romantic comedy since horror and drama are really my favorite genres. I was so excited just to be alone that I sat right in the front row of the second section, slumped comfortably in my reclining chair and stretched my legs knowing that, even if the movie was mediocre, it would still be a great time. I ignored the fact that the woman behind me kicked my chair so hard that I almost got whiplash and she did not apologize.

I was excited as I watched the beginning of the movie because the story line was great, as was the acting and I became confident that I was in for a treat. Ive enjoyed a few romantic comedies in the past like One Fine Day and The Proposal along with a handful more, but I must say that this movie was fabulous and adorable in every way. I laughed and cried. I laughed even harder later thinking that I must have looked funny laughing and crying by myself! Meryl Streep was great as usual and Alec Baldwin couldnt have been better. This has to be one of his best performances to date. It was refreshing to see him play a character that was completely vulnerable and loveable, not to mention at times hilarious. Steve Martin did well even though his character didnt shine as much as the others.

The plot was very interesting and I was held in suspense until the end of the movie. I kept wondering who Meryls character would end up with- Martin, Baldwin or neither. I dont want to include any spoilers but I can say that the story touched on the topics of divorce, grief, empty nest syndrome, healing, happiness and love (just to mention a few). I had a wonderful time and if youre thinking about watching this film I say go for it because its worth every minute!
