I Had a Dream

I Had a Dream

I Had a Dream

The last two mornings have been the same: I wake up to "et duex roulette",a phrase my subconscious has coined in my sleep. I whirl it around in my foggy head. "Et duex roulette."

I toss it about while making tea. I check the early morning news. Sarah Palin's Alaska promotional is the dawn's big winner. I turn her off. Turnabout is fair play.

I do not speak French. I did have a French housemate once, but mostly what I remember about her is her dog, Woofer, the one I mistakenly called "Wolfer."After months of this misnomer, Marie corrected me. "Iees name is Wooofer. Wooof. Wooof. Woofer."

My stupidity, trumped only by my frontier upbringing, clanged as loudly as the cymbals in the Boston Pops Orchestra. There was nothing I could do or say to fix my ineptitude. "Oh! I'm so sorry, Marie. I thought it was Wolfer."

"No Iees name has always been Woooofer."

Woofer smoofer. Wolfer is more descriptive. The mean s.o.b. wolfs down his fancy food with no apreciation at all. And her cooking it for him, with all the care she would for a husband or a child. Then she has to walk the bastard. He is one scary piece of work, this Woofer. Well, I guess he has a right to be, the way his life was before Marie. He was hanging from a tree in Indonesia when she found him and cut him down just in time. Hanging in preparation for butchering, she said. I can't imagine anyone wanting to eat something as tough and mean as this Doberman. Times must have been hard in Indonesia.

The mind fog starts to clear. An image of Woofer hanging and snarling will wake a person up.

Back to "Duex Roulette." OK. If duex means two, and roulette means wheel, what I've got is two wheels, right? Right. And these images of John Boehner and Mitch McConnell keep popping up...what ascene to wake up to. I should 'Gestalt' this. Now I'll have to add Woofer to the scene. Ok. Here's a dog's eye view of my dream.

"Grrrrrrrr. Agrrrrrrrrrr. Woooooof. Woooooooof."

"John. Get over here. They're about to spin the wheel. We've got to get our bets down. This is the big one. Get out of that tanning bed and bring your sorry orange ass over here. And see if you can get rid of that growling dog."

"Tell em to wait till I get there. I'm not through with my beauty treatment. Can't those damn Demorat doo-gooders see how important I am?"

"I don't think they care much about your looks, John. Come on now, the croupier is winding up to spin."

"Damn. I guess twenty minutes in the tanner will have to do."

"That's it, John. Run. Watch out for that black dog, though. He might have a bite to match his bark."

"Hell, I'm not afraid of him, Mitch. I'll tell everybody he's worthless and corrupt. They'll believe me. They WANT to believe me. They want to get their bets down, same as you and me."

"Just in time, John. How are you betting?"

"I'm on RED. Betting on red every time. All you have to do is put a scare into the bunch. Get 'em concentrating on what they're scared of and they can't think of anything else but how toget rid ofwhat scares them. Get the crowd thinking RED, see, and the sheer force of all that energy will affect the spin of the wheel. Watch me now, I'll show you how it's done."

"Christ, John, do we have to do this NOW? Can't we get on to the business of the game?"

"The game IS the business, Mitch. Don't you know that?"

"Oh, yeah, you're right. I forget that sometimes. Just a game, a game with mighty big numbers, though."

"Yeah, Mitch. You don't think the crowd is important, do you? Let me show you how to control these yahoos. I can get them stirred up and they'll never know it was me that put the Koo Koo theories in their minds."

"Last call, gentlemen. the wheel's about to spin. Get you bets down. Bets down now."

"Are you gonna hedge, John?"

"Course I am. Always. It'll fool the damn do-gooders, and the golden rule will stay in force."

"You mean, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you?"

"Mitch, are you stupid, or what? The golden rule is: THEM THAT HAS THE GOLD MAKES THE RULES. That is rule number one. And two, and three, and four and ...

I wake up to Orange John's grinning face leering over the bed. Howdy Doody, levitating beside him, swings his feet. His mouth is moving but I can't hear what he is trying to say. The wooden jaw flaps open and shut and his beady eyes blink. I see him shaking his little wooden head: "NO, NO, NO, NO." It's all he has in there.

Orange John grabs Howdy Doody, shakes him until his wooden teeth rattle. " I told you I'd handle this dammit. When I want your opinion, I'll tell you what to say."

I turn the television on again, and there is Sarah Palin, fishing in Alaska. And I thought Woofer was a problem.
