Foreword.

Foreword.

This series of articles, on the travails and torments of required writing for school term papers, thesis or dissertation, are purposely taken in the point of view of the student in the graduating or senior years. Hopefully, they reveal how much anguish and agony he goes through in every phase of the activity he is obliged to present, even to defend in front of a panel of peers, prior to receiving his much toiled-for diploma.

Here I now am, in the final year of my technical course in this venerable technological university, exultant that I would soon be leaving its hallowed halls in academic triumph, having kept my good grades in all the classes in my curriculum, some with flying colors, the rest on the strength of my geeky charm and nerdy looks. All maybe, except one: English!

Apparently, when the course was drafted way back I dont know when, nor do I care, the powers decided to include English as part of the curriculum to ensure better than even chance of success for its alumni in the global arena. For me, personally, it is a huge stumbling block, because I never felt the need to express myself, in spoken words or in writing, in structurally complete sentences, in perfect syntax and grammar. My usual line has always been that I would use my brain rather than my mouth and that the computer is mightier than the pen.

To make matters worse, my English professor has the opposite point of view and thinks of his subject as the greatest unifying force in the free world. Furthermore, he comes direct from the bloodline of Darth Vader, and perceives every information specialist as a Jedi knight that must be wiped out with impunity. He therefore spares no effort in putting forward the most difficult tasks to his class, which must be overcome to please him. This actually gratifies him more than all of his awards and appreciation plaques

Specifically, he wants each of us students of English to produce a formal study, viable enough to be published on the web and in the school journal, of an economic aspect absolutely unrelated to our Engineering background, with logical suggestions or conclusions of improvement. He even wants us not to benefit from the help of each other, in other words: alone, solitary, isolated, desolate, forlorn, lonely. A total Darth Vader!

So, in order to make good my dreams and ambitions, and secure my future well-being, I have to accede to Mr. Vaders demands, for now. It is not easy to come out of ones customary box and comfort zone, especially if one does not want to. Yet, somewhere in the back of my mind, where the subconscious and the scientific grapple with one another, I see the challenge as exciting and new, uniquely worthy of head-on collision. I can almost feel adrenaline pumping from every bio-electrical-mechanical cell of my body.

I begin to realize I am thinking more and more of this challenge, and automatically applying problem solving thought processes that are already second nature to me.
