Foreword.

This series of articles, on the travails and torments of required writing for school term papers, thesis or dissertation, are purposely taken in the point of view of the student in the graduating or senior years. Hopefully, they reveal how much anguish and agony he goes through in every phase of the activity he is obliged to present, even to defend in front of a panel of peers, prior to receiving his much toiled-for diploma.

The graduating student, more spiritually cognizant of his fortunate status having been born in a more technologically advanced country and under a culture more free, has grown mature in his understanding of the deeper purpose of the work he is originally compelled to do.

Whoever created the idea that graduating students ought to exert super-extraordinary effort in an extracurricular project, must have been inspired from somewhere hell if the students were asked, or higher powers if the teachers were questioned.

Personally, as long as my classmates would not know, I tend to agree with the latter. During my initial foray into the subject I quite hastily chose, I never imagined that my mind and my spirit would be so touched by lifes vicissitudes, which each of us must pass through. Most of my classmates would honestly admit to a similar inference, albeit not so loudly those others not intimate with us would hear. It is as if we are jump-started to face the real world while still in the confines of the academy and in the protective embrace of our tutors.

Marching into hell for a heavenly cause, to paraphrase a popular song in the past.

In this somber outlook, I thus earnestly proceeded with my work. One distinct advantage I have over those that have gone before me, including the professor and his former student turned colleague turned close friend, is that legwork has been reduced, courtesy of the Internet. Fortunately for my generation, lots of data may already be available through the information highway and one only has to rummage through to find creditable facts. (As a soon-to-be Information Specialist graduate, I could not be prouder or stand taller.)

As starter, solely from surfing Wikipedia and the article bases, I discovered:

1. India alone has a commanding 70 % of the offshore component of the BPO industry with revenues of upwards of 50 billion US dollars; and growing by about 30% a year. It has four out of every five call-center agents in the world.

2. Other locations in Asia like the Philippines, Vietnam, and China are emerging to take a share of the lead. So too are other countries like South Africa, Egypt, Kenya, and some from Eastern Europe.

3. The global "addressable" BPO market is worth $122 $154 billion, of which: 35-40 retail banking, 25-35 insurance, 10-12 travel/hospitality, 10-12 auto, 8-10 telecoms, 8 pharmaceuticals, 10-15 others and 20-25 is finance, accounting and human resources.
