I am corrupt
I am corrupt
I am corrupt
Good Evening,
I am an Ex-Employee of a MNC at Delhi. It took me total 2 years to share this with you. Might be this sound so impractical to blame the working, process and procedures of any MNC. There have been cases of Scandals, bribery etc. which has its own reality behind each of them, these cases comes up and after a period of time hides behind the curtain of fear of getting exposed.
I am one of those people who once raised the voice against the growing politics and corruption within the organization. I did it not to achieve any type of appreciation or reward, but to give justice to those who were affected. When I was about to complete my MBA degree from a School of Management Studies at Delhi the campus placements started. I was never interested to get into the job line, since my aim was to get into the research line. Somehow on a fateful day someone woke me up early in the morning and said that they were running short of HR students for the interview, and I just had to accompany them to the MNC.
I was constantly instructed by the team not to create any situation, which would be difficult to handle. In my MBA classes I as named " Question Mark", as a big question mark always hanged on my face, in the time of lectures. Most of the people thought my question are absurd because those were always linked to the theories of other subjects, which to my surprise had no specific answers, and were always unsatisfactory. However those were mad times of my life, which I always cherish.
After repeated instructions from the teammates, we entered the premise of the MNC. Trust me it was beautiful, the look, the attire, and the uniforms everything was just awesome. There were simply 3 rounds in the interview and I was the last one to be interviewed. The time I was being interviewed I simply thought one thing, and that was not to ask any weird question and I some how controlled my self. Among 5 of us, 4 were selected among which me who was considered as the weakest link got selected.
I joined the company on 7th of April in 2007 and the events started unfolding the bitter realities of the corporate structures. It was a Guarding Company, which I joined then. The first few weeks the employees kept saying that I would leave the company within 15 days, which gradually stopped with the passage of time. No one assigned me any work but I was determined and kept seeking for work. My first assignment was to work on ISO. It was lot of Documents involved in it and I did it to my best. The office hours started from 9.30 to 6 at evening. That time I was staying at Noida and everyday I came down to Vasant Vihar. Later I changed my location to Munirika, which was a bit closer to my work place. After a period of time I was considered to be someone on whom people could rely. Starting from guards to seniors, everyone started sharing confidential information's with me, with the confidence that their names would not be revealed to anyone. I did my best to utilize every experience I got in there. I even got a chance to work in ERP, the best part. I used to spend nights working with different departments.
This happy story very soon ended when suddenly I was assigned to work with the recruitment team. The first day I got inside the training department where the recruitment took place, I was a bit confused. The people wearing uniforms were standing behind a group of people in civil dress along with an employee checking the certificates of candidates standing in a cue of 3 from the entrance. The crowd was too big and everyone was busy doing something or the other. So I simply stood there observing everything for the first day. Later I found out that the people standing in civil along with the employee checking were "Dalals". With Time I understood a lot about the things happening in there. I also got chances to go out for Recruitments to nearby locations in and around delhi.
Every time there was recruitment I used to see the same faces. After a long time of enquiry from old employees I came to know that the civilians whom I used to see every time in the recruitment were Union Leaders of our Organization and were some how linked with the higher authorities. One day I was working and someone came to me and said that he had paid Rs 10,000 four months before, to get recruited and has not been recruited yet. After enquiry I found out that the senior executive whom I was working under was involved. I reported this event to the one who had recruited me. Two of the senior employees got terminated after that event. I was someone who took this step for the first time in the region for the first time. And for the first time someone of this stature was terminated because of involvement in the bribery case in recruitment. During that time I was assured of police protection, which I never got. Gradually things got unfolded, where I got to know about the entire nexus being handled from within the company's headquarters.
With time new staffs got recruited in the senior positions, and things started changing. Some fine day I was busy with the leave entry in ERP, I was called in a meeting and was questioned for my involvement in the bribery case in the recruitment held at ajmer, rajesthan. I was completely shattered when no one objected when the Senior Manager was pressing charges against of me. That time I strongly felt the sense of treachery and dirty politics being played behind of me. No matter of what the Senior Manager said about me but at east others knew about me, but no one objected. From there on I was constantly rebuked, and insulted in font of everyone. I felt everyday a sense of rejection from the entire team. I lost a lot of self-confidence in those times. My friends and roommates tried their best to console me. I could have left the job and joined another company, but I wanted to know what was actually going on, so I didn't resign. I found out that when ever there was recruitment the location was leaked by someone close to the Senior Manager. The dalals accompanying those people for recruitment used to take bribes from the applicants and used to circulate my numbers.
The plot of the entire thing was like this:
The information about the location of recruitment was simply confined to the department, which was silently leaked by one of the employees. This information was passed on to a group of Dalals. The employee themselves even at times acted as dalals, by collecting a sum ranging from Rs 10, 000 to Rs 30,000 from the applicants. The applicants simply trusted the people collecting the money since they had a great history of getting recruited on paying a specific sum of money quoted by the dalals on the basis of the chances of the candidate getting recruited. This "chance" which the dalals were concerned about circulated around as to how strict would be vigilance in recruitment be, as well as the location. Locations like Hrayana and rajasthan were big problems since the maximum of the Dalals were from those locations and it was hardly around 3-hour journey from delhi which could be covered in less time also. Once the candidates got recruited they are lucky, if not then they would get another chance in another recruitment. The post for which all this tamasha took place is " Security Guard" with a salary of Rs 3000.
This is not all; Lady guards working in there were constant targets of the people involved in deployment or giving duty. Even there were cases where the inspectors and head guards who were assigned to give duty to lady guards had asked them to compromise with their modesty. The funny thing is that they didn't even mind even if the lady guard was of the age of their aged mother.
For getting duty security personnel's of the company used to compromise to a large extent. There was always abundance of Guards in there. Dalals used to charge money from the guards to give them duty. The situation got so worse that we were instructed by higher authorities to send the specified guards to a location where we had no information about. Every Branch had a different union. At a point of time there were 23 registered unions running in there.
The main concern is that in the colleges the education imparted are not of any use in the real scenario. I was never taught that these things could also happen in an organization of this size and value. All those theories and explanations only look's good on papers and presentations. I am not someone who can stand against the entire education system all alone but people from the colleges have to understand that these theories wont help a student to understand the level of corruption in any organization. Today in any organization a normal student cannot survive until unless he completely moulds himself or herself in accordance to the environment. This is high time when the educational system in India should change. I have faced corruption in real sense and cannot forget this experience all my life. Hope this will wake up the sleeping educational system of INDIA.
However with time I left the company and joined at some other company. That time I felt the difference between getting a job and managing it. I was never taught in the College that there could be situations like this. But it all happened and passed away with time, leaving behind bitter experience in the shape of a scar on my confidence over people and systems. Today I feel an urgent need for a drastic change in the entire system, where at least the level of corruption can be checked. Now I don't fear for corruption because I don't think there can be anything worse than what I had faced in there. What I am concerned is about the many people like me who enter organizations and have to face situations like this. After all these events I don't think it is necessary for anyone to be honest with their job or their office staff members, because at a point of time someway or the other, he or she is going to get cheated or blamed for things they have not done. Corruption cannot be stopped until unless the people sitting at the highest positions in any organization want to stop it. Trust me, you alone are no match to what you are standing against.
I am corrupt because I fought against the corruption. I am corrupt because I was threatened at various stances and I stood for the truth. I am corrupt because I am not afraid to bring forward the reality. I am corrupt because I am one in among the millions who wrote the truth about what happens in real organizations. I am corrupt because I am among the millions whose articles are overlooked because you think you know everything. Truth is what is sought after in the name of corruption.
Thought of writing more but its time I stop and you begin, and this time it depends on you which side you choose.
I am corrupt
