Only one in ten people in Great Britain are pleased and contented with their working life

. Inevitably, huge numbers will take no action. You've reached this paragraph, which at a minimum indicates that you're considering or may be ready for a change.

We recommend you seek advice first - find someone who knows the industry; someone who'll give you career advice based on what works best for you, and analyse the career tracks that will suit you:

* Is collaborating with others important to you? Would you prefer to work with a small team or with many new people? Maybe working on your own with your own methodology would be more your thing?

* Do you have a preference which industry you would be suited to? (These days, it's vital to choose carefully.)

* Is this the final time you envisage re-training, and if it is, do you believe this career choice will give you scope to do that?

* Is it important for your study to be in an industry where as far as you can see you'll remain employable until retirement?

The most significant market sector in this country to tick all of the above boxes is the IT industry. There's a shortage of qualified technicians in the industry, just search any job site and there'll be a long list. However, it's not all techie people sitting in front ofscreens every day - there's a lot more to it than that. Most of workers in this sector are just like you and me, with well paid and stimulating jobs.

Many trainers will provide a useful Job Placement Assistance facility, designed to steer you into your first job. The fact of the matter is it's not as hard as some people make out to land a job - as long as you're correctly trained and certified; the growing UK skills shortage sees to that.

CV and Interview advice and support might be provided (alternatively, check out one of our sites for help). Make sure you work on your old CV straight away - don't leave it till you pass the exams! You might not even have passed your first exam when you will get your initial junior support position; yet this won't be the case unless you've posted your CV on job sites. In many cases, a local IT focused employment agency - who make their money when they've found you a job - will be more pro-active than a division of a training company. Also of course they should know the area and local employers better.

Just ensure you don't spend hundreds of hours on your training and studies, and then just stop and leave it up to everyone else to secure your first position. Stop procrastinating and make your own enquiries. Put as much energy and enthusiasm into finding your new role as it took to pass the exams.

You have to be sure that all your certifications are current and commercially required - you're wasting your time with programs which end up with a useless in-house certificate or plaque. Only fully recognised accreditation from the likes of Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA and Adobe will mean anything to employers.

Any advisor who doesn't dig around with lots of question - it's more than likely they're just a salesperson. If they're pushing towards a particular product before getting to know your background and current experience level, then you know it's true. It's worth remembering, if you've had any relevant qualifications that are related, then you can sometimes expect to commence studying further along than a trainee with no history to speak of. For students beginning IT exams and training as a new venture, it's often a good idea to start out slowly, starting with some basic PC skills training first. Usually this is packaged with most training programs.

Being a part of the leading edge of new technology is about as exciting as it can get. You personally play your part in shaping the next few decades. We're only just starting to get a feel for how technology will affect our lives in the future. Computers and the web will significantly revolutionise how we view and interact with the rest of the world over the coming years.

Let's not ignore salaries either - the income on average in the UK for a typical IT employee is considerably better than average salaries nationally. It's a good bet you'll bring in a much greater package than you would in most other jobs. The search for appropriately qualified IT professionals is certain for quite some time to come, because of the continuous expansion in IT dependency in commerce and the very large skills gap that we still have.
