Cancer is a disease during which a group of cells show an uncontrolled growth. Sometimes these uncontrolled growth of cells spread to different parts of the body through blood or lymph. There are two types of cancer. One is malignant tumor and other is benign tumor.

What is ICE Chemotherapy Regimen?

ICE Chemotherapy Regimen is a mixture of three drugs namely ifosfamide, carboplatin and etoposide.ICE Chemotherapy is useful in treating growing and recurring lymphomas in the early stages.

Treatment of cancer by ICE Chemotherapy

Blood test is done before the start of the treatment of ICE Chemotherapy. ICE Chemotherapy is generally given through a thin plastic tube which is inserted under the skin and into a vein near the central line or is passed through a vein in your arm. It is also sometimes painful. Before giving the chemotherapy treatment one is given anti-sickness medicines. They are injected through the central line, arm or cannula which is connected to the infusion. Even some anti-sickness medicines prescribed are in the form of the tablets. The Chemotherapy drugs in the ICE Chemotherapy Regimen are given separately in the arm or cannula.

ICE Chemotherapy for the treatment of the Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma Cancer

ICE Chemotherapy is a type of a short time treatment used in treating Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma Cancer.

ICE Chemotherapy Regimen was injected in the patients in three cycles with the interval of two weeks. Peripheral blood progenitor cells were then taken from the blood samples of the patients. It was then decided by the doctors that only those patients who had achieved a complete response or a partial response to the ICE Chemotherapy could go for the transplantations.

A Complete or Partial Response was seen in 108 patients. Out of these 89% of the patients who responded positively to the ICE Chemotherapy underwent transplantations successfully. Also the patients who had undergone transplantation and had achieved a Complete Response to the ICE Chemotherapy had a good survival rate than the patients who had achieved the Partial Response.

ICE Chemotherapy Regimen side effects

Due to the injection of the drugs used in the ICE Chemotherapy Regimen the patients feel sick. Ifosfamide drug is said to rub wrongly on the gall bladder lining which could result in bleeding. In order to prevent the bleeding the drug cyclophosphamide is added to ifosfamide and is injected in the patients.Mesna is also available in the tablet form.

Common ICE Chemotherapy side effects like hair loss, loss of appetite, bleeding, nausea, low resistance against other diseases, vomiting, diarrhea, sleepinees and the loss of balance are seen in most of the patients due to ICE Chemotherapy treatment. These side effects are seen for a very short span. But more harmful permanent side effects of the ICE Chemotherapy like damage to kidneys and women infertility are also seen in patients.

One of the drugs named as etoposide from the ICE Chemotherapy Regimen causes the pain in the vein when injected in the patients.

Thus before taking any kind of Chemotherapy treatment it is necessary to consult the doctor and take precautionary measures in order to avoid the side effects. Also one should go for an alternative therapy if the prescribed drug used in the particular therapy does not suit one's body either due to weak immune system or some kind of inherited diseases.
