IPhone Dominates the Mobile Application Development Sector for the year 2010

According to Screen Digest, the growth of mobile applications generated an increased profit in 2010 by 160.2 percent to reach $2.2 billion. Revenue was reported to be approximately $828 million the year before. The iPhone App store ranked first generating $1.8 billion revenue showing an increased activity in the iPhone application development sector with games taking the top spot as the most popular category with 52.2 revenue generation that goes to its credit.

Newer smart phones with state of the art features and operating systems have cropped up nearly every other month on the market which is giving Apple's iPhone a run for its money. That said, the iPhone's App store still top the ranks when it comes to mobile application development and raking in the big dollars. The introduction of the iPad also made a huge impact in Apple's revenues as the tablet introduction alone topped $2 Billion for Apple last year.

Over the years Apple has built a household name in combining technology with simplistic but captivating design and has also earned the trust of its consumers. Jack Kent, IHS mobile media analyst stated that "Apple has been able to maintain advantage by leveraging its tightly controlled ecosystem"

At the rate of growth the mobile market is currently moving, 2011 would see even more competition for iPhone and their App store revenues. It is estimated that revenue might grow to $3.9 billion which is a of 81.5 percent increase from last year.

The "Freemium business model" might just prove to be the key factor responsible for growth and is proving to be quite popular with developers. The model offers the basic application for free with the basic functionality available but the charges are for the premium features. Users are enticed with the basic application to which they are motivated to sign up for premium features. iPhone application developers are also following this freemium model which is proving to be very popular with almost 30 percent of the top grossing iPhone application out generating revenue from app purchases.
