ITIL Training - The Learning Stages of ITIL


There are typically three phases of training before you become a full-fledged ITIL expert. Each phase comes with its corresponding exams to validate your comprehension of the principles and practices of that specific stage in your training.

Foundation Training

The first phase of the training is what is called ITIL Foundation Training. The gist of the material included in this phase encompasses the components of an information system, including the data, the personnel, the hardware and the software. In other words, it is the basis on which the services and managerial techniques revolve. Discussion will also involve the role within the system of each of its components.


Foundation training is also offered online at a much lower cost than offline classes. This obviously comes from the fact that the facilities and equipment available in a real, live classroom will not be provided by the training outfit. Instead, registrants will be attending virtual classes from their homes or offices. Typically, this type of training is offered at a few hundred dollars. Students are given electronic material containing the matters to be discussed.

As compared with the offline courses, online ITIL Foundation Training will tend to be less exhaustive because of the necessarily informal nature of the virtual classroom. That is why, as a supplement and completion of their study of the basics of ITIL, real live classroom courses should be taken by the students.

Practitioner Training

From his knowledge of the theory, the student then proceeds to practitioner training. This phase of the ITIL course is devoted to the principles and practices that govern the conduct of the employees in making sure the different components of the organization are fulfilling the role assigned to them. This aspect of the course has three separate specializations. It is up to the student whether he will take one, two or all three of the specializations.

Each of the specializations is tackled in individual courses that cannot be taken simultaneously for the sake of better focus and apprehension. The three aspects are (1) release management, (2) configuration management and (3) change management.

Release management studies the complex process of developing, testing, deployment and providing ongoing support for software products or computerized systems. the role of the practitioner in this area is to exercise immediate control of the different stages of creating software. They are the people who provide real-time and personal supervision of each stage of the development-testing cycle until the product or system is fully functional. They also take charge of the release of the product to the client and they see to it that post-implementation support is available.


Configuration management training is concerned with establishing the stability of the software or system and with maintaining that stability upon its implementation. This task is addressed by monitoring the functionality and physical integrity of the process or software while it is in use in the organization.

Change management training involves supervising any process of change in the organization. There are four aspects of change that are managed by these specialists; tactical changes, changes in the technology, adjustments in the structure of the organization and modifications of the attitudes and behavior of the personnel.

Managerial training

Obviously, when all the personnel and equipment have been deployed and the system is fully functional, there will be need for people to supervise the system as a whole. Managers orchestrate the mutual collaboration among the different factors making up the system and its organization. They are responsible for the smooth interaction and coordinated activity of the separate processes in the organization.
