Ian Woosnam Against Sam Torrance In The European Senior Tour
Golfing legend Ian Woosnam will again go head to head against Sam Torrance in the European Senior Tour this week
. Torrance's re-designed Fairmont St Andrews course will host the Cleveland Golf/Srixon Scottish Senior Open from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd August.
If either player wins in Scotland then they will leapfrog the other competitors and find themselves in first place; only Euro 11,409 separates Woosnam from current leader Mark McNulty, with Torrance trailing only by Euro 2,977 more.
Torrance may appear to have the upper hand as the course bears his very own signature, and he'll be hoping that his knowledge of the course swings the balance in his favour the Scottish Senior Open is once again won by a Scot, with three of the previous eleven winners being Scottish. Had Torrance won last year he would have become only the second player, after Tommy Horton, to win the event twice. As it was he was beaten into second place by the Englishman Peter Mitchell.
Torrance seems to be encouraged by his recent purple patch; he finished third in the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open a fortnight ago and fifth in The Senior Open Championship presented by MasterCard last month. He said: "It's always nice to go back to the Home of Golf and I'm looking forward to it. I fancy my chances."
It is not just Torrance chasing a double success; Ian Woosnam will be looking for something similar. Having followed up his two Irish Open successes with the Senior Irish Open, Woosnam would like to replicate his three Scottish Open victories with the Senior version this weekend.
The inimitable Welshman Ian Woosnam, winner of last year's Senior Order and currently sitting second in the rankings, will be hoping his Forgan clubs will help him overcome the patriotic support for Torrance from the Scottish crowd.
It will not just be Torrance and Woosnam appearing at Fairmont, John Chillas, Longmuir, Bill McColl and former Ryder Cup player Gordon Brand Jnr, who is still chasing his first senior tour success,
Fellow Scott Ross Drummond, currently 11th on the European Senior Tour Order of Merit, led the US Senior PGA Championship at the halfway stage in May and will hope to improve on last year's tied eight place finish.
Peter Mitchell, last year's champion, will be the player they're all fighting to beat. Having won three times on last year's tour the Englishman is going well again this year, and he would love to repeat his success from 2008 this time round.
Mitchell said: "I'm looking forward to defending. I don't know what to expect this year as I've not played the golf course but it will be great to go back to the Home of Golf. Last year was a great win for me. My expectations were quite low going in but I managed to hold Sam off.
Mitchell also commented on the fervor of Scottish support, and touched upon their grasp of the game, "In Scotland the crowds are always great and they are very knowledgeable. They are very keen about their golf."
Former champions Noel Ratcliffe (2000), Denis Durnian (2002), Terry Gale (2003), Nick Job (2005) and Jose Rivero (2007)n will also be making an appearance and striving to impress.
The aptly named Peter Senior is currently embarking on his first Senior Tour and like fellow Aussies Mike Harwood and Peter Fowler; he will be hoping he can gain a victory this time round.
Senior, at fifty, is a relative youngster in comparison to the Chairman of the European Senior Tour Committee, Maurice Bembridge; Bembridge will tee off in his 243rd tournament, taking him past the previous record holder Tommy Horton.
Fairmont St Andrews will host its first professional championship in The Cleveland Golf/Srixon Scottish Senior Open since its 17million revamp, and Ian Woosnam will be hoping his Stowamatic trolley finds a smooth path around the course.
When the Open Championship returns to the Home of Golf in 2010 it will become an Open Qualifying course.
As well as a new host venue, the Scottish Senior Open has a new title sponsor for 2009 with leading golf manufacturer Srixon Sports Europe, which operates both the Cleveland & Srixon brands in the UK and Europe, strengthening its existing association with the European Senior Tour. Cleveland is already the Official Club of the Senior Tour and Srixon is the Official Ball Supplier to the Senior Tour.
The Cleveland Golf/Srixon Scottish Senior Open rounds off another superb summer of golf in Scotland, backed by national events agency EventScotland, which has also included The 138th Open Championship at Turnberry and the Scottish Hydro Challenge at Macdonald Spey Valley Golf Club.
