Icd-10 Vs. Icd-11 Which Is Better For Us Healthcare?

With ICD-11 on the horizon, many people are wondering if it would be better to completely skip ICD-10 and hop straight onto ICD-11

. Every healthcare specialist, from medical coding specialists to outsource medical billing companies, are already overwhelmed by the prospect of upgrading to ICD-10, so there seems to be no reason to go through with it if they are just going to have to make another upgrade rather soon. The alpha version of ICD-11 is already due out this year, so their concern is that it would not make too much sense to continue with the upgrade to ICD-10 for medical billing and collections.

Is ICD-10 even worth the effort?

The deadline for the implementation of ICD-10 is October of 2014 (earlier October, 2013), but this deadline is rather meaningless when you consider the fact that ICD-11 will be released by June, 2015. There are different opinions out there on whether or not ICD-10 is worth it, but many people are of the opinion that you need to take the logical next step to ICD-10, if you are ever going to be able to use ICD-11 properly in the future for appropriate and timely medical billing and collections.

ICD-11 is definitely better for the US healthcare system and healthcare revenue cycle management since it would bring the US on par with the rest of the world, but one should not assume that this means ICD-10 should be skipped. All Providers are going to have to upgrade to ICD-10 anyways because they have to be able to meet the October, 2014 deadline. The ICD-11 beta will not even be out at that time, and you never know when a Clinical Modification (CM) will be available for the US.

Skipping ICD-10 may not be a viable option

The few Providers and physician billing services who are expecting to skip over ICD-10 should change their game plan right away because we could be waiting until 2020 to get the final version of ICD-11 with the CM. ICD-11 is definitely going to be an improvement for the US healthcare system, but Providers will not be able to make that improvement without the stepping stone of ICD-10.

One Provider has been quoted as saying that you will have to have ICD-10 because it is like you are building a house and ICD-10 is the 3rd floor. Although it would be nice to be able to skip ahead to the 4th floor in the form of ICD-11, you cannot get there without the foundation laid out by ICD-10.

Prepare in advance for the transition

Insurance and software companies seem to be ready for the upgrade, but the Providers and their medical coding specialist staff in the healthcare revenue cycle management departments are the ones that are lagging behind even with the preparations for ICD-10. Now that the final date of implementation has been postponed by a year, the Providers/Hospitals seem to be taking it a bit easy. But, they should remember that it takes time for the medical coding specialist and medical billing specialists to get trained and certified, and there is no greater moment than now to initiate that process.
