Ida Rosenthal: The Trail Blazer Of Adult Lingerie
The catalog of Adult Lingerie available today consists of an incredible variety of imaginative designs
. From traditional teddys and baby dolls to edible underwear, Adult Lingerie has come a long way since the days of the Victorian corset. But this article will take a quick trip down memory lane to revisit the origins of these varieties of adult toys.
Today's Adult Lingerie can be traced back to the French word for linen. It may seem unbelievable these days, but that's all that was available for material hundreds of years ago. Whether transparent or opaque, lingerie is visually appealing and seductive, as they were meant to be. Yet they are also intended to be practical, and the supports offered hark back to the earliest days when aesthetics were a somewhat secondary consideration.
Adult Lingerie is also the very foundation of modern fashions and maybe considered the beginning of fetishes leading towards adult toys. There is hardly a woman who gets dressed without some form of undergarment, despite the use of lingerie for only the past few hundred years. Ancient Greeks and Romans did recognize the need for female athletic support, and breasts were tied with strips of cloth during competition. These are the forerunners of the brasserie and remained simple binding solutions for millennia. But as one-piece supports they could often be quite uncomfortable.
The word "brasserie" comes, again, from the French, for bodice, a vest-like undergarment. The modern bra only evolved in the twentieth century with the notion of separate cups. The modern bra is credited to a New York City seamstress by the name of Ida Rosenthal, who was inspired to create a brasserie with separate chambers, or cups, for women's breasts in 1922. This idea, that the breasts should be separated and individually supported, revolutionized lingerie designs forever. Padding and elastic straps soon arrived thereafter, and specially designed maternity or nursing bras were not long in following. Minimalist designs became popular with the rise of feminism, and today there is a cornucopia of styles available.
Like the brasserie, the corset has enjoyed a rich history full of changes. Once constructed of tortuous laces and busks, the corset has been radically altered over a long period of time. Originally both men and women wore corsets, which were designed for medical as much as cosmetic reasons: by compressing waistlines, they helped support weak muscles and straighten backs. Who knew this might one day pace the way for adult toys. Today's fashionably imaginative lingerie has come a long way from those times. Despite relaxed social mores, practically all women still believe in wearing undergarments as the foundation of their outfits.
