Being a student can really test your powers of frugality and ingenuity.

Many years ago I shared a flat with a friend and life was just like the UK sitcom 'The Young Ones' - Corn Flakes for breakfast and Baked beans for lunch and dinner. We enjoyed watching the dishes pile up and sat debating episodes of the X-files into the small hours of the morning, beer in hand. Those were the days.

But when it came to affording things...well that's where we really shone.

I was studying French part time and couldn't afford the language cassettes necessary to gain a basic grasp of the lingo. And so I wracked my mind trying to figure out how I was going to raise the 250 necessary to buy the basic package. I was already on the breadline, so there really wasn't anything I could cut back on.

But then I realized that I could possibly find a second hand French language course for, perhaps, half the price? And so the treasure hunt begun and saw me wading through all the classified newspapers in search of a find (no auction sites in those days.)

And there it was! For 60 a man living a few miles away from me was selling his French language course - books tapes and all. Fantastic! So I wasted no time (because he had someone else that wanted to buy it of course), pulled on my boots and shot out the door.

On arriving at his house he fetched the box and placed it in my eager hands. It didn't really look like the courses I had seen in the magazines and I asked him how old it was, "Oh it's about twenty years old", he said. I remember contorting my face slightly at the realization that I was about to buy something so old, and asked if he would accept 30 for it. But what he said next made we realize that I was being an idiot. "French hasn't changed in twenty years. What they spoke then, they speak now." And with that I gave him the hard scrounged money and left with a perfectly adequate language course.

I say that to say this; how often do we pass over things which would be perfectly adequate for our needs in favor of things which are much more expensive but serve the same purpose?
