Ideas and Suggestions for Outdoor Christmas Decorations This Year
During the holiday season there is nothing more effective to put you in the Christmas spirit than driving around and looking at all the beautiful Christmas decorations. And without doubt you will come across one house that displays such beautiful lights that you are determined to make your garden even more beautiful this year. But where do you start? Outdoor Christmas decorations do not have to expensive, and if you are on a limited budget there is still lots you can do to create that magical Christmas Wonderland.
There is nothing that spells Christmas more than a Santa Claus and a Christmas tree. Colours of red, green and white are the traditional Christmas colours. However, if you would like to make your display one of a kind, choose to go with a theme of silver and blue lights, or red and green exclusively. Choose a decorating theme, such as a "presents under the tree" setting. To create this setting put several presents in various sizes and colours under a beautifully decorated Christmas tree.
If you do not have a natural tree in your garden that could serve as the centre Christmas tree in the display, buy a potted one. You can always plant it later. Decorate the tree with a garland and some pretty ornaments. These can or rather should be - the cheaper, shatterproof ones that are available in many shops as these typically withstand the outside elements much better. Next, put some lights in the tree. Once it is illuminated the garland and the decorations will create beautiful light effects at night. Lastly, put some wrapped presents under the tree. You can either buy a lighted display or you can easily create your own: Wrap several thick cardboard boxes in foil wrapping paper and add some bows. You may want to put some sand or a large rock inside the boxes to avoid them blowing away in a big wind. To make the boxes light up, punch several holes about 1 cm in diameter in the sides and the top and put some strings of Christmas lights inside. Don't forget to make a hole in the back of the box so you can pull out the cable.
Another idea for outdoor Christmas decorations is to create outlines of festive shapes solely with strings of light. Spell "Merry Christmas" on your grass, outline a present complete with bow on your house or your roof, or wrap a large tree completely in Christmas lights, limb by limb. Hang icicle lights from your roof-line or your trees. While this certainly takes a bit more work than simply setting up some ready made decorations, the effect of this display will be spectacular.
Or if you want to go all out, set up a nativity scene, decorate your garage with a climbing Santa Claus, put candy-cane lights around your front door and set out Christmas luminaries. Add snow-flake decorations in your trees and put lighted reindeer in the middle of your front lawn.
The choices for outdoor Christmas decorations are endless, be it store-bought or home-made. There are usually only to factors that limit your creation of that spectacular Christmas Winter Wonderland your budget and the size of your front lawn.
