Ideas for Decorating with Venetian Blinds

Venetian blinds are an inexpensive, stylish way to dress your windows and decorate a room. Not only are they cheaper and easier to hang and care for than curtains, but also Venetian blinds add a great dramatic flair to any room. Although Venetian blinds usually only come in natural colours, you can come up with plenty of decorating ideas.

The material and finish of your venetian blinds creates a bold statement in your home. One of the most popular materials is wooden venetian blinds. Although these are more expensive than vinyl or aluminium, you can match the wood to other furnishings, creating a modern, homely and rustic appeal to a room. Many people prefer the natural appearance of wooden blinds.

Different shades and finishes on your blinds change the dynamic of your room. Rich, dark woods and stains give a dramatic flair, while lighter aluminium can help to brighten a room with little natural light.

Keep in mind the uses of the room you're decorating. Rooms with high humidity, such as bathrooms and kitchens, cannot use wooden venetian blinds, as these will warp. A child's room should not have a cord dangling over a cot so much sure you have a way to keep the blind cords well clear.

Venetian blinds create dramatic horizontal lines, which can make rooms look shorter and wider. Use mirrors to expand the perceived spare of a room, and vertical lines such as lamps and bookshelves to heighten them.

You can even decorate your Venetian blinds themselves. If you don't like the colour of your blinds, you could paint them to match your dcor. To paint wooden blinds, rub each slat with sandpaper first to help the paint adhere. You could make your Venetian blinds stripy by adding a different colour on each slat, or close the slats, and paint a mural on them. This mural can only be seen when the blinds are closed.

Other ideas for decorating your venetian blinds include adding stickers or decals to the slats a great idea for a child's bedroom. If you're particularly crafty you can even use a burner to etch designs on to wooden blinds.
