Back to some advise when making Shelves. On common mistake is the use of Table Routers.. To many people use this table to cut the larger grooves which hold horizontal shelf portion for a book case. Unfortunately, most of the time these shelves to long for the table router. The common wooden shelf for a bookcase is right around 72 inches. The average table router is only about 30" to 35" long.
So, when making a project that is twice as long as the router table, you are bound to encounter some problems. Unless you have a professional set-up at home, we need to solve this problem, for convenience and safety reasons.
While this may sounds like a hassle, simple items you should have laying around
will get you though the build. First, If you have or can borrow a roller stand , that will solve the problem immediately. If you are planning on making shelves, or larger bulky items, this is a great investment to have. Just roll it under the shelf, and instant support. If not, use a bench stand to accomplish the same thing. Finally, if none of those items are available, and you need to finish the cut, set up boxes that can hold the work piece together till finished. Now, please use common sense here, don't use raggedy, half empty rotted boxes to hold up the shelf. Use a sturdy, closed box that is perfectly symmetrical and flat. The whole idea is to help finish safely and complete the cuts. Many of the tips are also located in Teds Woodworking. When cutting groves, stick to two basic tools. First, a table saw with a dado blade set up in the table saw. This will allows you to cut the grooves in one or two passes. Remember to support the overlapping ends the ways we discussed. The other tool will be a handheld router. I is very important to use one with an edge guide. An edge guide is a straight edge that clamps onto each end. Use a straight bit and line up the edge of the cutter with a line you have drawn on your project. Clamp down your edge guide along the line, and cut along the line.
