Having a Birthday Party is something we grow up with; we celebrate it every year with family and sometimes our parents even let us have a party with our friends from school. Since I was a child having birthday parties have changed slightly, people now don't have the time to make all their own food, prepare drinks and decorate for a party. As times change, so do our needs and help to plan for a special function or occasion.

If you have never organised a function before, don't worry I am here to help you with a few planning tips. I work with couples in their 50's that are just planning their first organised function, so it is possible at any age to throw a great function for someone or something.

Parties these days don't just need to be for birthdays. Engagements, graduations, milestone wedding anniversaries, and even retirement parties are great ways to show that you care and to get all your friends and family together to celebrate with you.

Date:

Planning a date may work in with a set schedule or be flexible. Work with a date that works best for the guests invited. If you are planning a big party, plan for a Saturday night so guests have time to relax after a week's work and a day to recover. It may be cheaper and more convenient when hiring a venue for a Friday or Sunday.

Guest Lists:

This will depend on your function type, however family and friends are the best option. Work functions will vary and you may need to check with your boss before sending invitations. Don't go overboard when planning an initial guest list as numbers can easily blow out of control, especially if you are working with a budget.

Beverages:

BYO is a very popular method for parties. If you are providing drinks, don't forget to include WATER. It is amazing how many functions forget to provide this, and if you plan for a big night will definitely be needed at some point. Punch, juice and soft drinks are also great to provide, especially for children and those that don't drink alcohol.

Beer, wine and spirits do become expensive when supplying in bulk. Consider if a venue that provides drinks will be in your budget, and if not find a venue where you can supply your own. Self service eskies are a cost effective and social; however for more organised functions hiring a bar staff to serve and clear for the night will be a smart investment.

Catering:

A must, especially when alcohol is served. Don't let your guests go hungry and organise a professional caterer. Finger Foods and Buffets are great for small and large functions, and they provide plenty of choice for you and your guests. Finger Foods can be served to guests over a period of time, where buffets are served to a set schedule. BBQ and Spit Roast Buffets do seem to be the most popular for everyone.

Cleaning:

Ensure plenty of bins are provided, as this will ensure guests can place their rubbish easily and keep the area clean. If you forget don't worry, the boxes from beer can be a great last minute solution.
