Thus, if you compare real gold of the same density with the ring you are testing, it should weigh the same. You can identify its density by dropping it into a glass of water (it should sink completely). The change in volume of water for same density gold will be the same. Then, have the rings weighed. A ring that is not pure would weigh lighter than the real gold ring.

Another way of identifying if the gold is genuine is to check for discoloration, especially in high-friction areas of the ring. If there is no discoloration, try giving it a good rub. Discoloration due to such friction indicates that the gold is not pure. In old rings, a fake ring may appear with stained black marks.

Apart from that, you could try giving it the acid test. Gold is insoluble thus cannot be dissolved in nitric acid. If the ring dissolves in the acid, it could actually be made of silver or base metals. This method is commonly used by metalworkers to remove other alloys in gold during the inquartation and parting process, and is not very safe for laypeople that are unsure of how to handle the acid.

Last but not least, you could rub the ring on an unglazed ceramic piece of material. Real gold would leave a golden streak as a small amount of the element will be transferred, while a fake would leave a black streak.
