If A Shipment Is Sent To Me On A Cod Basis, Can I Refuse It?

COD shipping has some important characteristics which make it completely different from most other shipping methods

. The main difference is that if a Chicago courier service attempts to deliver something to you on a COD basis, you do not have to accept the package. Because the delivery was made COD, this also means that you are refusing to pay for it as well.

COD means collect on delivery. This is very different from any other type of shipment that you would be likely to have brought to you, because most of those you would have paid for well before they reach your location. With a COD shipment though, you don't pay anything until after you have received the item. This gives customers numerous opportunities to decide that they don't want something, and if that is what they decide, they do have the right to refuse it.

When you receive a COD package, you shouldn't refuse it just on a whim however. This is an option which could easily be abused, so instead you should think about what valid reasons are for refusing a package. If the item is damaged, it would make perfect sense to refuse the shipment. Also, if the item which arrived was not the same as the one you ordered, such as the wrong model or wrong color of an item, you would be well within your rights to refuse it. What you should try to avoid is refusing items simply on whims.

If you refuse items without a good reason, you expect to lose your COD privileges. Nothing says that a company has to offer you the option of receiving your goods on a COD basis, and in fact, most will not. If you refuse a package without a good reason the company will likely not extend you that option if you need to do business with them in the future.

Don't let a company ever make you feel like you have to accept a package which is sent to you COD though. You do not have to ever accept a COD package. Some companies will try and word things to make you feel like you are obligated to accept a package to lower their refusal costs, but you never have to accept COD packages if you do not wish to. You may still have to pay shipping and handling however, which should have been made clear when you place your order.
