If I Take A Cab From Downtown To A Suburb, Can I Get A Flat Rate?

Flat rates are something which some taxi services have in place either because city

laws have required them to, or because they are trying to attract more customers to their service. Normally, this is something which will only in place to accommodate for travel between locations which see a great deal of traffic moving between them. The most normal example of this is between a downtown core and the airport in a major city. As time goes on though, this notion of a flat rate cab fare has been expanding, and is now showing up in more places, including sometimes travel to suburbs.

Many people want to get a flat rate on their cab ride, because they see this as a method of traveling which will save them money. In many cities, this is why a flat rate policy was put in when taking travelers from airports to downtown or vice versa. They wanted to make sure that cab drivers couldn't try to run up fares by taking a roundabout way when carrying a person they knew was a traveler and probably unfamiliar with the city. Even if a cab driver took a direct route, the flat rate system usually provides a slight discount, which is probably why people are interested in getting this when traveling from downtowns of major cities out to suburbs.

There are already multiple cab companies in a variety of cities which are offering this now. However, this will most frequently be found in the absolute largest cities. In the smaller cities, transport between the downtowns of the main city and the suburbs isn't a long enough distance to really warrant a flat rates system.

When a flat rate system of any kind is in effect, it should be posted somewhere in the cab. Taxi drivers should have either a sheet posted in the back seat, or possibly on the window. If you're trying to find a flat rate cab company in your area, you can always call the cab companies directly and ask if they offer any fees structured in this method.

If you do get a flat rate to a suburb, remember that it may only cover your ride to a certain part of that suburb. If you want to travel direct to a house that isn't on a main thoroughfare, you may have to pay extra for the final leg of your journey.
