I get a little bit frustrated with commercials these days

. I'm not exactly old, but like most Americans of this century, I have grown up with a constant advertisement in my face. Interestingly enough, the ads aren't what annoy me because some of them can be quite entertaining. What annoys me is that I don't know who's telling the truth, and who's lying. Well, I recently learned that Portland auto glass companies aren't lying when they say you need to get your rock chip repaired immediately. Apparently, cracks in the windshield are a more serious problem than I had estimated. In fact, they say that you should avoid ever replacing the windshield if you can help it.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has some very strict quality standards that they monitor and enforce with a series of tests that any and every new car must pass in order to be sold to the public. Portland auto glass companies try their best to be as strict as the U.S. DOT, but they don't have the manufacturing equipment that the big car makers have. One of the most important series of tests they perform pertains to the windshield. I'll discuss later why the windshield is so important, but it's important to understand that a vehicle's first windshield is really not supposed to be replaced. As time goes on we're finding more reasons to fix a chip before it becomes a crack that warrants a replacement; one of them being the fact that 80% of windshield replacements are done incorrectly.

One of the tests that windshields are required to pass has to do with its effectiveness in helping the roof retain its shape in a roll-over. As dedicated to as they are to windshield repair Portland companies just don't have the capability to perform these tests. In one of these tests, the lesser of one and one half times the weight of the unloaded vehicle or six-thousand pounds is applied at an angle to the roof. If the roof depresses more than five inches, the automobile fails. These tests are very important because at least thirty percent of a roof's strength is provided by the windshield. In pick-up trucks the amount of support provided by the windshield increases up to about seventy percent.

Although there are plenty of options for windshield repair Portland companies don't' have control over the whole process. Believe it or not, the process of manufacturing and installing windshields is flawed in at least three ways. When the glass is transferred from the oven to the car it is in its cooling phase and is carried by an extremely hot piece of metal. This temperature difference is the first flaw and basically inserts potential energy into the glass. The second flaw is a bit harder to avoid because it pertains to the installation of the windshield on the car. Because the car is metal, it has a hard time bonding with the glass windshield, which puts more stress on the glass. The third flaw comes from lining the two outer edges of the windshield with a black ceramic material under high heat. All this makes the outer two edges of the windshield extremely vulnerable to cracks.

To tell you the truth, all the hassle that a car will put you through makes me wonder why I own one sometimes. Even so, they serve an important purpose and our investment is to do its job, they need a trip to the Portland auto glass repair shop when a pebble does its worst. Should everybody be expected to preserve their original windshields for as long as they own their car? Of course not, but it's something to shoot for!
