Iim & Prometric Reveal The System Used To Calculate Your Cat 2010 Score

After the CAT 2010 results have been declared

, many candidates have felt that their scores are not justified to what they had performed. Hence, IIMs and Prometric have disclosed their scoring system for CAT 2010.

IIM and Prometric have presented the three step scoring process. This has been developed and supported by the Standards of Educational and Psychological Testing and the ETS Standards for Quality and Fairness. Let us discuss the three steps which have been followed by IIMs and Prometric.

Step 1: Raw score is Calculated

The raw score is calculated on the basis of the questions answered correctly, incorrectly or omitted. There was 3 marks for each correct answer, 1 mark for each incorrect answer and no marks for the questions which were omitted. This scoring methodology ensures that candidates are only awarded points for what they know. Candidates are not awarded inappropriate points for random guessing, say IIM & Prometric.

Step 2: Raw Score is Equated

Equating is a statistical process used to adjust scores on two or more alternate forms of an assessment so that the scores may be used interchangeably. Industry standard processes were used for equating, such as those outlined within the ETS Standards for Quality and Fairness, mentions IIM & Prometric.

Step 3: Equated Raw Score is Scaled

The scores are placed on a common scale or metric in order to ensure appropriate interpretation.

The IIM Scaling Process

IIM mentions the scaling model as follows:

Section Scores = (Mean of 40 and Standard deviation of 24) 0-150

Total Exam Score = (Summation of three section scores) 0-450

Candidates are presented with four scaled scores. This includes an overall scaled score and three scaled scores for each sections, Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability and Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning. Each of the section scores evaluates the distinct set of knowledge and skills. The scores are not correlated across the sections. A high score in one section does not guarantee a high score in another section. Percentile rankings are provided for each individual section as well as for the overall exam score, IIM states.
