Ijen Crater
Located in East Java, Indonesia is the Ijen Crater
, 65% of the surroundings are covered by a group of plantations which consist of Teakwood, Rubber and Coffee. The soil is extremely fertile as a result of the Volcanic Ash. The beauty of this crater is the fact that it is filled by a brilliant turquoise blue lake, with its surface streaked in patterns of yellow sulphur created by the steady winds that blow across the lake. The rocky landscape is surreal and many beautiful plant species can be found such as Edelweiss and the Casuarina Junghu. The Ijen crater lies about 68km from the town centre. The best time to view the crater is at dawn when the yellow sunlight reflects upon the water making it shine with an ethereal brilliance.
This crater supports an active sulphur mining operation; the volcanic gasses are channelled through ceramic pipes resulting in condensation of molten sulphur. The molten sulphur is deep red in colour however as it cools and hardens it turns to yellow. The miners break up these yellow blocks and carry them out in baskets to the crater rim. Definitely hard work as the typical loads weight around 70-100 kilograms and the crater rim is about 200 metres above! This crater is a popular tourist attraction and many visitors travel from the nearby East Javanese City of Surabaya to view this wonder. Surabaya is Indonesias second largest City and the capital of East Java. Visitors travel by either public or private transportation to reach the Ijen Crater. There are a number of tour operators that organise tours to the Ijen Crater where visitors will get the chance to trek over this breathtaking landscape and also meet some of the hardworking miners!
Visitors to the Ijen Crater usually stay in a
Surabaya hotel. Hotels here range from budget to luxury and the ultimate
Surabaya luxury hotel would be the Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya. This hotel is set in lush tropical greenery and offers 385 guest rooms and suite plus 7 superb restaurants and bars. This makes it an ideal place to stop, relax and enjoy all what Surabaya and its nearby surroundings have to offer.
