Imessage For The Iphone 4s Proves The Best Im System
One of the key features found on the new iPhone 4S handset is the new iMessage system
. This platform is Apples take on the hugely popular Blackberry Messenger that is incorporated on all Blackberry devices. Here we take a look at both of these platforms and see if the newcomer can match the veteran in this field.
RIM's Blackberry Messenger was the first universally used integrated messaging system. The appeal of this platform was so huge that it can be partly attributed to the international success Blackberry devices have achieved over the past three years. The principle behind this type of messaging is very simple, send messages via a WiFi or 3G connection rather than your carriers network. Not only does this give you a truly instant delivery but it also saves the user any cost. This type of messaging has been popular on home based computers for years with platforms such as MSM Messenger and Google Talk proving a huge hit with users everywhere. Blackberry Messenger is also known as BBM and users add their friends to the platform by inputting their e mail address or their unique Blackberry PIN number. More recent versions of this system have also introduced a barcode system where you can simply scan your friends code to add them. Groups can be easily added so you can send a message to the whole group at one time and your own personal profile enables you to update your current status making the whole thing feel rather like a new social networking page. Another great feature of the Blackberry system is the option to "Ping" one of your friends. This vibrates their phone in order to get their attention and is rather similar to the Poke facility on Facebook but with the added vibration.
The iMessage system on the iPhone 4S has the advantage of having watched other IM systems mature and see where they have gone wrong. This may be why using iMessage does not feel vastly different to other alternatives. A nice aspect of the Apple system is that it is integrated into the phones built in messaging system. Rather than relying upon you selecting whether you want to send an IM or an SMS message the phone detects if an iMessage is viable and if it is then this method is selected. An advantage to this is that if an iMessage cannot be sent for any reason then an SMS alternative is instantly fired. On the Blackberry this would mean exiting BBM and then composing the message again in SMS format. Pictures and locations can both be easily sent via this system and the user has full control over the viewing of conversation history and the forwarding of messages to other contacts.
Blackberry Messenger pioneered the IM system and has aged well but the new iMessage platform on the iPhone 4S is both intuitive and easy to use. The option to toggle between SMS and IM is a real attraction and ultimately this system proves the winner in this comparison.
