Imitating Sounds

Destructive, stubborn, rebellious, and insolent are not the words children should

be referred to with, it is not only wrong but also off putting especially when heard from parents or teachers. Regardless of how treatable mild to severe hearing loss is according to a physician, the undetected cases in children are behind this ongoing situation. Can we crack the case? How can an audiometric or hearing exam be of use?

There was an anonymous physician who mentioned that a child who has not spoken by the age of two could be suffering from deafness. Here is how he reported his findings. After considering that all children imitate to speak, parents would be able to see the connection between hearing and speech.

From two to six months, the infant will only talk gibberish. Sounds will help him attract attention later on. When the infant starts to hear his parents, he will begin using the sounds which evoke a positive response. Even the manner of speaking of other people is recognized. Words and sentences are the next things he will learn. Children do not learn speech all at the same age and progress is left to the encouragement of the parents. From an unpleasant tone of voice to the limited attention given to a child, a parent can be the reason behind poor speech development.

The physician who said that infants can develop several differences when it comes to vocabulary also shows how speech development in children follows a normal pattern. A three word vocabulary will be the average skill for a year old baby. When he is at eighteen to 20 months, the words will have reached 20 used in two word groups, then 250 in sentences by age two.

Usually, the use of elaborate and sophisticated apparatus to test the hearing of infants is not necessary. Parents can easily determine whether their baby shows evidence of not hearing ordinary sounds, when such sounds originate out of his sight. A few such sounds, which should be heard easily by an infant with normal hearing, are a moderately loud voice coming from the next room, a telephone or doorbell ring, footsteps or a ticking of the clock.

Should you suspect your baby to have hearing loss, quickly tell the doctor. For infants with complete deafness, examinations were done through hearing tests. Making the sound louder is the way by which a hearing aid can be used for a baby even if he is born stone deaf due to residual hearing. It is possible for babies to use hearing aids. A baby can adjust to the hearing aid rather quickly wherein he finds them comfortable enough to wear and not to pull off.

When a child is introduced to hearing aids from the time of infancy, then the onset of limited hearing ability will not prevent him from being enrolled in a regular school, and it will not force him to go to a special school for the deaf. If hearing aids are used, then these children will have the opportunity to learn certain skills in their formative years, the skills that would help them converse with and understand the people around them. Free from shame or stigma, using these hearing aids automatically comes with a new lease on life, an opportunity for these children to live socially fulfilled lives far from the life of silence they were originally born with.
