Impact of Social Network on Profits and Productivity

Social networks have been growing and have been increasing in popularity over the last few years. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace-these are common social networking sites and services that are very famous in recent times. This means that more and more people are spending a lot of their time on social network sites. Additionally, major target group for social networks are teenagers, and people in their 20's and 30's. This means that students are hocked on to it, meaning that there is an impact on their time management. Also, it means that a majority of the working class, mostly in the software industry and people that have access to computers and internet log into social networks. Additionally, it also means that they are on these sites networking, while they are at working.

Since the beginning of social network most people, many questions have been raised with regard to the amount of time spent on these networking sites, and how that impacts the individual that is active on the site. Now, the questions have become more calculated in terms of how much loss in productivity there has been because of networking sites, and the amount of money lost because of the loss in productivity.

With regard to students, research has revealed that a lot of parents are complaining that the increase in social network sites are distracting children; especially between the ages of 10 to 17, and more usage between the age of 13 and 17. On the work front though, since the initiation of network sites, entrepreneurs and managers have been raising questions of the impact of social network on their subordinates and their productivity. They have also expressed concerns on the amount of time spent on social networks and the direct impact of such distractions on profits.

For this reason, over the last few years, many organizations have undertaken studies on the amount of time spent on social networks. Additionally, how it can be directly linked to productivity and thereby to profits. A recent story in the Indian Express (http://www.indianexpress.com/news/City-Inc-loses-Rs-1-4-cr-annually-to-social-networking-during-work-hours--survey/703015/) revealed that Pune Inc lost Rs. 1.4 crore annually because of employees logging in to social networking. The survey was conducted by a city-based online job portal MyJobsinPune.com. Some other researchers have estimated close to a 12.5% loss in productivity at work because of social networks. Social networking has been criticized by from businesses around the globe and have been considered them a liability.

However, despite the losses that companies face, social networks are a necessity not just for employees but for businesses as well. Most of the businesses also depend on social networks to enhance their appearances on different networking and regular network. More often than not, in this age of the internet, people believe word of mouth recognition rather than advertisements. Therefore, the businesses approach towards advertising is also changing. This system forces businesses to hire people to market their products and services through these new mediums. Also, businesses encourage updates of satisfied experiences by customers and employees.

Overall, it could be fair to say that businesses have a price to pay for social networking. However, it is also important to remember that it has become a necessary evil in today's day and age.
