, filling, cleaning, crowns and full dentures. Dentistry is also geared towards preventive measures to save teeth from decaying and at its worst, from being pulled out and replaced by dentures.

A dentists first measure in saving a decayed tooth is by treating the infected tooth then filling it with amalgam or other composite filling material. However, in such cases where the level of decay in an infected tooth is aggravated, tooth filling might not work. When this happens there are usually two options: tooth extraction and root canal procedure.

Tooth extraction is not your best option as it is best if natural teeth are preserved. The best option for a decayed tooth that is beyond tooth filling is root canal.

What is root canal?

A tooth has a pulp in the center and in the canals inside the root of each tooth. The pulp is the source of nourishment for the tooth as it first breaks out of the gum. As a person matures, the pulp becomes unimportant and it can be removed without an adverse effect on the tooth as the blood supply needed by a tooth is already provided by the gums.

A decayed tooth aches due to the sensitivity of the pulp. The tooth decay wears down the dentin and enamel of the tooth. If the level of tooth decay has reached the pulps level, bacteria infects the pulp and no amount of antibiotic could permanently treat the infection. The infection causes inflammation which in turn reduces the supply of blood to the tooth which inevitably keeps the infected pulp from healing. Root canal treatment is the best option for the decayed tooth. Endodontic is the branch of Dentistry that specializes with diseases and treatment of a tooths pulp.

Root canal is also applicable when the pulp has been damaged by trauma as in the case of a fractured tooth. A tooth that has been treated for filling for a long period of time is also susceptible to pulp sensitivity. However, an inflamed pulp without visible infection might not necessarily call for a root canal treatment as it might heal on its own. You need a consult with a dentist to see if you really need a root canal procedure.

Signs and Symptoms

An infected pulp is not a matter that could be ignored as infection can readily be the source of abscess formation in the mouth. This is painful and if left untreated could cause health complications. Here are some general signs and symptoms that you might need root canal.

Your tooth hurts when it meets resistance as in biting, chewing or brushing.

Your tooth is overly sensitive to heat and cold.

There is swelling around the tooth area.

There is tooth discoloration.

The tooth is broken or cracked.

A root canal treatment does not translate to eventual tooth extraction in the future. More often than not, a tooth that has gone root canal treatment will last.
