Insulation is measured according to R values, also called "Thermal resistance". It signifies resistance to the transmission of heat. A high R value indicates greater insulating effectiveness. R values of thermal insulation is determined by the type of material used for the insulation, on its density and thickness. In the case of a multi layered installation, the R value of the different layers are added. When you decide to add more insulation to your home, you increase its R value and resistance to transmission of heat.

There are four categories of insulation: loose fill, blankets (batts and rolls), rigid foam and liquid foam. Blankets and loose fill are usually used between floor joists, between roof rafters, in attics. Liquid foam is mostly used to seal air gaps or in wall cavities. Rigid foam is usually applied for external insulation.

There are several factors you should consider when selecting insulation for your home: the raw materials used in the insulation and its recycled content, its long term performance, environmental impact from the production of the insulation material, and the health impact to your family and the installers.
