Computer cookies can be temporary as well as permanent. Temporary, or session cookies are stored in the memory of the browser you use and they get deleted immediately after you close the browser. Permanent or persistent cookies are the one which are permanently stored in the hard drive of the computer and if you delete them, they get recreated when you revisit the websites which have saved them on your computer. Cookie technology has helped immensely in addressing the necessity of tracking the information provided by the visitor of a site. For example, if you submit your information in one of the pages of a site, it will save the same in the form of cookies and the cookie will be associated to you so that if you revisit the site or another page of the same site, you do not have to re-enter your information. It helps in saving lots of time and effort.

Temporary cookies save the information only till the browser is opened and they get automatically deleted when you close the browser whereas the persistent cookies allow the website to permanently recognize the web surfer with the help of unique id tags which are saved on the hard disk of the computer and another copy of the cookie is saved on the server of the site. These types of cookies can persist for many years. Both types of cookies are used in many types of systems and applications such as auto registration login, protecting web preferences and in online shopping when we need to save items in shopping carts. Persistent cookies are more helpful as they can be reused many times and are very helpful in web profiling. They help the web sites in keeping the usage track record of a particular visitor apart from his/her details.
