In India, the most sacred and spiritual beads are known as Rudraksha and the necklace made from these beads are often referred to as rudraksha mala. These necklaces are usually about thirty-three inches long and are approximately eight millimeters in thickness. Due to their 5 dimensional designs these necklaces are also known as pancha mukhi. One rudraksha or pancha mukhi mala consists of a total of 108 beads.

The number 108 holds a great significance in the Hindu mythology. Every auspicious and spiritual activity is performed 108 times. This is the reason the rudraksha mala is always made of 108 rudrakhsha beads. These necklaces could be used for counting prayers or worn by the spiritual preachers or followers as a symbol of devotion towards God. According to many Hindu as well as Buddhist believers, rudraksha also helps in healing of body ailments, relieving stress and bringing positivity in the approach of the wearer.

Beads made of many other materials such as wood, sandalwood, rose, Basil, and crystals can also be used for spiritual activities. Sandalwood is said to enhance tranquility while rosewood beads are believed to strength the spiritual aura of a person. Crystal beads are also a very popular choice with regards to spiritual utilities. The crystal beads are considered to be good in affecting the emotional, physical and spiritual behavior of a person by striking a balance between all these three important aspects of one's life.

According to popular beliefs, the color and material of beads has a great effect on the whole spiritual activity. For example, white beads such as crystal can enhance the effect of appeasing mantras while for increasing the effectiveness of mantras, the recital should be carried out using gold, silver, copper or malas made of lotus seeds. For meditation and concentration, one must use Rose Quartz, as it helps in stimulating the heart cycle which eventually increasing the patience level and the compassion in the person who is performing the prayer.

The principle aim of using beads for spiritual reasons is to ensure convenience while praying. If one needs to keep a track of the prayers, it could be done easily using the beads without the fear of losing the count. So, you can use beads for counting the prayers and diving deep into the ocean of spirituality.
