Important Fabric Details To Consider When Choosing Furniture

It should be pretty simple to find a new piece of furniture for your home because there are so many different kinds of furniture to choose from

. The physical appearance of furniture usually plays a big role in making a decision. A lot of thought should also be put into how much the item will be used because this will influence what fabric is ideal.

Rayon and cotton, which are made from plant fibers, are often used as upholstery. Cotton is simple to clean, as long as spills are not ignored. Prolonged exposure to sunlight will cause cotton to fade, though. This fabric also tends to wrinkle, and it is quite flammable. Rayon is crafted from wood chips, which means it also burns well. This material is inexpensive, but is not as easy to clean as cotton is; rayon may stretch or shrink when it gets wet.

Synthetic materials, which are actually manmade, can be made to strongly resemble natural fibers. Nylon is an inexpensive but very durable synthetic material. It does tend to fade in bright sunlight, but it not difficult to keep clean. Olefin is newer option for upholstery. Like nylon, this material is cheap and strong. This fabric resists many stains, pests, and chemicals very well, but it cannot handle high temperatures. Direct sunlight will cause this fabric to fade.

Animal products, though also renewable, are usually more expensive to produce than plant products. Leather has a texture that is unlike anything else. This material is quite durable, though it may not be the ideal option for a home with clawed animals. Another common upholstery material is wool. Wool does not deal with moths or sunlight particularly well, but it is flame resistant. Wool and leather require very special care.

If the upkeep related to animal products is just too much for you, you might want to look into synthetics that are designed to resemble these materials. Vinyl can be formed to resemble leather. Vinyl is not as durable as leather, but it is a lot cheaper. You can use acrylic instead of wool, though it probably will not last as long as wool does. Comparatively, acrylic is cheaper and easier to care for. Acrylic does not fade easily.

Blends are a wonderful choice for buyers who cannot figure out which material will best fit their needs. Blends are made of two or more different fibers. A blend may be natural or synthetic, but it can also be made from both types of fibers. The goal of a blend is to draw out the best characteristics of the materials involved.
