Important Facts About Indonesian Teak Furniture

One of the most sought after materials for outdoor furniture has always been teak

. Its great weathered look and durability have long made it the most favored outdoor furniture product. Much of the outdoor teak furniture on the market comes from Indonesia, and there are many pricing and grading factors to consider.

Manufacturing in Indonesia varies widely. There are companies who buy from individual carpenters, who build inexpensively. The products are labeled and sold as though they are from a high end company. In most cases, the teak has been treated chemically to achieve the teak coloration. It is unknown how these chemicals effect the environment or the consumers who use them.

There are other companies who are more standardized in their approach, and they use modern machinery and more conventional types of construction. You will find their products are more durable because they rely on higher caliber teak, fittings and glue for their construction of products. A side by side comparison shows far more professionalism than the co-op method of buying.

When teak furniture gets to the marketplace, it is up to the consumer to have done their research before making purchases. The expense of any type teak is enough that it is a major investment for a homeowner. Being prepared with questions about the pieces is wise, and do expect to get good answers.

It's important to start by asking if the teak is actually Grade A. The answer will tell the consumer much. Indonesian teak is a lovely yellow gold color and is rarely Grade A. If the wood appears reddish in color, it is Amazon teak and is common to the big box stores. It may be referred to as teak but it will not achieve the same silvery color with time and weathering. Indonesian teak will weather nicely, but it is only American teak which is considered Grade A.

Fittings should be of solid brass for longevity. With a little education, it is possible to tell if it is real brass or a galvanized metal that looks like brass. Real brass won't rust. The finish should not appear to contain additional oil. One of the real benefits of natural teak is that it contains enough oil just in its natural composition. Be hesitant to purchase chemically treated or oiled teak.

That natural oil is what makes teak age so beautifully. It is also the major factor in its long term ability to shed water rather than absorb it. Shipbuilders long relied on teak for building because of that very nature of the wood, and it is the same reason it is so valuable for outdoor furniture. The silvery aging makes it beautiful too.

Good teak furniture will come with a guarantee. A minimum of four to five years is the optimal warranty time. Most inferior wood and construction will not last that long and the consumer will have the option of making a claim. It is always important to make certain that the warranty information is clearly marked on the receipt.

There's nothing wrong with Indonesian teak. It can be just as long lasting and beautiful as any other. It may not be as high of a grade as American teak but its price-line will also be lower. The consumer who makes an effort to become knowledge before a purchase is more likely to end up with a product that will please them for years to come.
