This inhibits the release of a chemical neurotransmitter called acetylcholine and stops muscle contractions that wrinkle the skin. Depending on the location of the injection sites, small muscles in the face are essentially paralyzed and prevented from wrinkling. Results are temporary and can reduce wrinkles by 80%.

Patients who are suitable for this treatment typically fall between the ages of 35 and 65 with minor facial wrinkles such as crow's feet, forehead furrows and frown lines. Prospective patients are screened for current medications, health problems and allergies before the process.

This procedure is usually 20-30 minutes from start to finish. A numbing cream may be used over the injection site and minimal discomfort may be experienced. The process is usually performed in an outpatient clinic and the patient leaves shortly after treatment. Results are usually evident within a week and may last three to five months.

The patients are often advised to stay out of the sun, but normal activities can usually be resumed immediately. Some common adverse side effects may include nausea, headache, flu-like symptoms and redness or pain at the injection site that usually resolve in days. Eyelid drooping, double vision, uneven smile or loss of ability to close the eyes are also possible and can take up to 6 weeks to wear off. Serious adverse effects of dermal fillers toxin include muscle weakness, swallowing difficulties, pneumonia, speech disorders and breathing problems.

Alternatives to this type of cosmetic procedure include minimally invasive collagen and fat fillers. More extensive wrinkling may require surgical procedures such as facelift, forehead lift or eyelid surgery.

Cost for this type of procedure can vary widely depending on location and expertise of the doctor, plastic surgeon or dermatologist. Patients are often advised to budget for follow-up treatments as effects only last three to five months.
