Important Information About Buenos Aires

If you would truly like to know Buenos Aires, nothing will really replace visiting and walking around the city

. However, before you make your journey, there are a number of important things that you need to be aware of.

Buenos Aires is the capital city of Argentina. It is the largest city in the country, having a population of about three million people. If you include the suburbs, the total population goes to about 13 million people. The city is actually an autonomous district and not a part of Buenos Aires Province, from where it was removed back in 1880.

The weather is generally mild almost throughout the year, except for a couple of weeks in February and August when it gets hot and chilly respectively.

Life in the city goes on even at night, although it tends to gets calmer. There are bars, discos and other social places that are open from dusk to dawn. The calmest day is Sunday, when many families spend time together.

The official language in Buenos Aires is Spanish although there are some differences from the Spanish spoken in other parts of Latin America. However, English is also a common language here, and you will even see many signs in English. The tourist industry is largely run in English.

The official currency in Buenos Aires is the Argentine Peso. However, you will also be able to use the American dollar in many places, including shops and entertainment centers. You may also use credit cards in many places. Have your ID handy if you want to use a credit card. If you want to use ATMs, you will find many of them at strategic parts of the city for easy access.

If you want to exchange money, you can do it at exchange bureaus or banks. Although you can also do it at the airport, you will end with relatively less money because of the poor exchange rate. Have your passport ready when you go to exchange money. The bank working hours are between 10 AM and 3 PM.

You are expected to tip for the services you receive in Buenos Aires. Generally, you are expected to give a tip of 10% of the amount charged in restaurants, hotels, bars and for delivery services. You do not necessarily have to tip taxi drivers, but neither are you barred from doing it.

It is better to have a cellular phone for communication as public phones are quite rare in the city. You can purchase a prepaid phone for just 120 Pesos, or about $9. However, the per minute rates are relatively higher than in either Europe or America.

Alternatively, you may use the 'locutorios' that have cabin phones. You will make your payments during your departure. Some of the 'locutorios' also have Internet services that you can use relatively cheaply.

The various means of transport that you can use in Buenos Aires include taxis, buses and subways. However, it is better to walk as much as you can. You just need to be on the lookout for drivers who seem to have little regard for pedestrians!
