The most painful headache a person could suffer from is the chronic cluster headaches. These headaches usually occur at short incidents and unexpectedly. The pain affects around the eye area. This headache is called cluster because it occurs in clusters of time. Chronic headaches can last a year and the attack or onset of the headache can happen every day.Unfortunately, these headaches are very difficult to treat, and even drugs that are prescribed have been found to not be so effective in the prevention of these chronic cluster headaches.

Cluster and chronic cluster headaches don't really have history of causes. Though there are a number of theories, most of them are not proven yet. Some doctors say it may be due to abnormalities of the blood vessels within the brain. The nerves and chemicals of the brain are also affected. Since the head and the face is connected with the brain, these are affected too and so causes these headaches.

The cluster headache can happen unexpectedly and won't even show warning signs that they will come. The pain is very frustrating and it will badly affect one side of the head and around the eye. Some people say that the pain is so sharp; like piercing the eye with an ice pick or as if something is stuck in the eye like hot poker. The pain is also described as scattered to the forehead, neck, shoulders and even gets to the teeth.

If the cluster headaches occur in clusters of weeks to months, these headaches can occur and last for a year. There is so much pain with these headaches. The attack is expected every day; the duration of the pain would be around 15 minutes to 3 hours. The attacks would usually happen or occur at the same time of every day. According to observance and research, the pain can be anticipated between 9 in the morning to 9 in the evening.

There are two treatments. The first medication is called the abortive drugs. These are taken for pain reduction of the cluster attack. While the second medication is called the preventative medication, that is effective to reduce the pain of the chronic cluster headaches' severity and regularity.
