Important Points Before Your Website Goes Live
Before your website development is completed and published on the Internet
, there are some important points that web designers should make you aware of so you know exactly what to expect form your site across the web.
Firstly, the completed website once coded and uploaded to the Internet, may not look exactly the same across all different browsers and versions such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari and Opera. This can not always be corrected as different browser can render images and code in different ways. Many
web designers will develop websites for optimal viewing with Internet Explorer and Firefox which have a majority share of the browser market (76% according to W3Schools). Google Chrome is fast becoming a bigger player with 17% of the market according to W3Schools.
In addition to there being many browsers available to users, there are many plugins and settings for individual browsers too that cannot always be accommodated so many developers will develop websites to the default settings of the browsers.
Your website may also look different on a PC than on an Apple MAC, just to complicate things even more. Again, it may not be possible to fix images and layout so they match perfectly.
Sites on mobile phones, iPod's, iPhones or iPad's may not look the same as on a PC or Mac due to the much smaller screen sizes. If your website uses Adobe Flash for animation, this will not appear on an iPod, iPhone or iPad as there is currently no plugin available on these platforms. The same could be true with layout and images if you view your site through a gaming machine such as the Playstation 3 or Xbox.
Zooming in on a website using a browsers zoom function will likely distort the page in some way and your web developer may not be able to keep viewing images and page layout consistent with any other view other than at 100%, which is what the site should be optimised for.
Website resolution is another important factor. Websites should be developed for an optimal screen resolution of 1024 * 768 or higher. Users viewing a site on a ccreen resolutions below this will likely see some sideways scrolling within the browser however less than 1% of users are using a screen resolution lower than 1024 * 768 according to W3Schools.com.
With so many platforms available to surf the internet on nowadays, it's important to understand that your website may not look exactly the same on each one. Your
web designers should optimise your site for particular browsers or platforms, likely to be what the majority will view the site with. However, if you know that you need your site for a particular platform such as an iPad, it is essential that you tell your web developer this at the very start of the project or you could be sorely dissapointed.
