Important Steps To Becoming A Singer
So, you've decided to pursue a career in singing and you're totally new to the art
. To begin with, hopefully you live in The Big Apple! It's the mega center of all things music. And then on top of that, there are some other major steps you should take.
Train with the best
In any industry, you want to have graduated from one of the highest institutions. You shouldn't be explaining at an audition what the heck your school is. So, begin researching the most respected institutions in your industry so that when you're sending out your demo and resume for gigs, one of the first things someone will see is that big name school. It's like a stamp of approval. It immediately puts you in the playing field with the big dogs. Remember that agents, labels, jobs, groups etc. get hundreds of applications. They CAN be picky. So they will be.
Figure out your style
You don't have to be able to pull off any type of song, sound, voice, you name it. You are unique. Find what you flourish at and work on that. Are you amazing at vocal vibrato? What about singing high notes? Discover your unique sound and highlight that. On demo tapes, pick songs that flatter your voice.
Network
Like in any industry, you have to know people to get ahead. Put your name on appropriate newsletter email lists to get industry updates and event information. Join groups or online companies that put together regular events for those in your line of work.
Off time
You're going to have times when you don't have a singing gig. First of all, land yourself a regular, paying job so you can cover your bills. Secondly, don't let your voice rest. Practice every day. Keep up those breathing exercises for singing. Constantly try out different songs to see which ones will sound good on demo tapes since you need to have a variety to choose from. But, keep the wind up in your sails even between jobs.
YouTube
Don't forget the magic of the Internet and Social Media. Consider your YouTube channel as your cyber resume. Potential labels can visit that and listen to your most current work as well as see how you look (they do care.)
Most importantly, love it. Do not pursue it to fill up your bank account or to become famous because those things rarely actually happen if ever. So, it better be something you'll be excited to do each day.
