Improve Freestyle Swimming By Practicing The RightDrills

Freestyle swimming is not hard to learn and most swimmers know how to swim freestyle

. But if you want to improve freestyle swimming then you must practice the correct drills to make it better.

In this article I had categorize those drills that you must know to improve freestyle swimming. Those categories are balancing, breathing, kicking and turning.

1# Improve freestyle swimming through balancing

The idea of balancing is to let the water support your body while you not wasting much energy on it. The best way to practice this is by leaning your back on the water while your leg kicks lightly in the water. It will be best if you have a partner to hold your head when you start this drill. Once your kick is more relax and quieter your partner can release the support and let it be on your own. Just remember to stay relax and you will float.


2# Improve freestyle swimming through breathing

This drill can be related to body turning but many people makes mistakes in this area that I think it is important that breathing drills should have a section of its own. The thing about breathing is that many people make the mistake of breathing in and out on the same turn. This will easily get you fatigue as you breath not enough oxygen into your body. Practice breathing in at one turn and breathing out at the other to yet your subconscious mind get used to it.

3# Improve freestyle swimming through kicking

You don't have to kick fast and powerful to go faster. In fact you should relax and kick gently for a more efficient swimming. A simple way to practice this is by doing vertical kicking drill. Position yourself vertically in the swimming and start kicking to stay afloat. Make your kick feels like a pendulum swinging back and forth. Make sure both legs are close to each other and do not do a kick cycle that is too wide. If you are new to this drill and unable to stay afloat by just kicking then stretch your arms to support yourself. Once your kick improves and you can float by just using your legs fold your arms on your chest and continue practicing.

4# Improve freestyle swimming through turning


When doing spinning it is important on how you position your arms, head and body. Your head must constantly look down on the floor and only rise up above the water when you need air. Your body must be position at the side for each turn and not facing directly towards the water. As for your arms, the one inside the water should stretch as far as possible while the other arm above the water should move slowing towards the front going pass your head like pulling a zipper.

When it's time to turn, trust your arm into the water and stretch as far as possible and turn your body at the same time. Your other arm that was in the water moments ago should pull back straight towards your leg. Beware that your might sink if you didn't do it correctly. That is why you must have good body balancing beforehand.
