The choice of improving or replacing a computer is a tough one

, even for computer gurus. Although there is no straight answer to this question, there are ways of determining the best option to take.

If you constantly maintain your computer, you should not worry about replacing it for at least 3 years from the date of purchase. Computers that are constantly checked and cleaned of viruses, spyware and adware will definitely last a long time.

If your computer is less than 2 years old and it is performing below expectation you should seriously consider improving it instead of replacing it. There are many tools that you can use to repair computer without the need to hire a technician.

There will be a stage in the computer's life cycle that the cost of maintaining or upgrading them may not be cost effective. You should consider replacing your computer if:

The computer is out of warranty: OEM manufacturers offer a one-year limited warranty on parts and labour. Some computer stores like Best Buy, Future Shop and Staples offer service plans that extend the warranty to 2 or 3 years. Limited warranty usually does not cover virus removal, spyware, adware and application related issues. When the warranty expires, get a quote first on how much it will cost to fix it before considering repairing it or replacing it. Remember that most warranties do not cover accidental damage

The cost of repairing the laptop is above $300.00: Damaged laptop screens and motherboards usually costs above $300.00 to fix. If your computer's screen is damaged or if your motherboard is defective, the best option will be to replace it.

Problem PC is over 5 years old: Parts for them may not be available unless you either purchased a used part.

PCOperating System is at least 3 generations old:If your computer is Microsoft Windows 2000 or lower, you may not be able to take advantage current applications. Service packs and support for older operating systems are usually not available - this may pose a security threat if you are using your computer to browse the Internet.
